The simplest little resonator instrument of all. Please add links to plans, photos of your canjos and ideas you've found that make the most of this diminutive instrument. (The image is a temporary placeholder, I'll replace it any day now!)

Maybe it is just me, but I love to sit there and pick out songs I know or songs people want to play on my Canjo. I own a couple of Canjo Song books from Gitty, and looked around online and found a…Continue

So I've made a few of this tin can banjo things. Having a blast playing on them. I've made a couple out of empty tin "soup" cans and one out of a beer can. I cut a few other cans to prepare them to…Continue

If you've used an upright can on a chordophone, here's the place to show your work.I'm looking for an olive oil can right now, one of those really pretty ones from Eastern Europe.Continue

Hullo Guys n' Gals.A small question, please. When taking the string through the bottom of a can such as a Coke can or similar,do you use a insert of some description in the string hole in the can as I imagine taking a string, especially a nylon one through the hole may chafe it and cause it to fray?....
Thanks for the info,guys.Appreciated...
I am no expert but used the high e string form a set of standard set guitar strings tuned it to b. Also used dulcimer feting.
Cans are expendable, if one doesn't work you toss it with no remorse. I know what you all are thinking, just let the can go. These things are so cheap to make, just start again by setting the old neck on another can. For strings you can use pretty mutch any, each has it's own trait for tunning. I pick up used strings, once I asked Rex Fowler from Aztec Two Step for a string he broke on stage. I also remodel and repair homes for a living and I find a lot of old beer cans stuffed in the walls, the last was a six pack of Bud's from the early 70's. Find old cans from garage sales and places like that. When you find that your comfortable with your build then throw one of your favorite cans on. have fun with it!
Another question! What string (gauge, etc) would you use on a Canjo bearing in mind most cans aren't very strong? I'm up and down the aisles of the supermarket looking at cans and not what they contain but what they look like! It's a bit of an obsession at the moment!...
Hullo Guys n Gals.A question or two regarding a Canjo build from a Newbie.Does it make any difference when making a simple Canjo (using maybe a beer can or similar) wether the neck inserts into the can or wether the neck lies underneath the can and if fitting a Piezo, where is the best place to fit it?....
Thanks, I'm a heck of a better carver than Canjo Player.
That's a real nice carving on your canjo's headstock, Pete.
I like it.
