WOW!!   This forum led me to ICE BOB's page and videos.  And to an new (to me) tuning: D,G, Bflat, D.   Or 3 string: D, G, Bflat.  Ice Bob does some nice songs in this minor tuning, (Big Mary and Poor Wayfarin Stranger.)  Some good songs, playing and singing.

Bob, I am already messing with these, can you give us some tips?   And a key?  I am guessing Gm.  ? Thanks to you.

2 string favorites:   Octave G.  'Open G'.   The A or 5th biggest string from a s string set tuned (down) to G  - and the 3rd (G) string from a 6 string set tuned G like a standard guitar - this works out to be an octave higher than the bigger string.

If you like slide blues, this is incredibly easy.  See my videos playing a yellow guitar for demos and instruction on 2 strings.  So fun and easy.  :)

There are other ways to octave tune (E&E  or D&D).   They play the exact same as G&G, but do not sound as good to my ear.

If you have no stringed instrument back ground and if you like the sound of slide blues, I reccomend this as your starting point.  Good luck, good wishes and God bless.

3 String Favorites:  Somehow, I never mentally got  the I/V/I  tuning most CBG players use: DAD or GDG.  It never 'clicked' for me.

What does work for me is DGB (Open G) tuning.  This would be the same as a standard 6 string guitar using the 2nd, 3rd and 4th (smallest) strings -  and the also the same as the banjo tuning using (again) the 2nd 3rd and 4th strings from a banjo tuning.   It is pretty much like my 4 string open G in sound, but a little deeper tone (without the small string used on the 4 string.

This works best with frets, but is entirely do-able fretless.  :)

This 3 string tuning is somewhat instinctive if you play a 6 string guitar or a banjo.  A bonus for me, is that it is easy to add an f chord and play in the key of C.  Bonus #2, it sounds better to me with playing slide than my 4 string does.  Deeper tone,

Fingered Chords:  G is open.   Boogie note is a 4 count with fretting the d2 on the 3 count.  The C chord frets the smallest (b string) at b1 with the index and fret d2 (big string second fret with the 2nd (bird) finger.    For a C boogie note, fret the middle string (G) at the 2nd fret on count 3 of a 4 count strum.

For D7, fret the small (Bstring) at b1 (first fret) with the index and the middle (G) at g2.

Someone might tell you that "technically these are not chords, just 'power chords.'  BFD  :)

Hi Folks.  Good idea for a forum Bob.

Favorite 4 string Tuning:  I have tried different forms of open G, open A, open E, 2 different forms of open D, and GDAE (mandolin) tuning on 4 string cigar box guitars.

I always come back to DGBD open G AKA Spanish or banjo tuning for my 4 strings.  It is easy to look up free banjo chords for this tuning.

#1, it fits my voice most of the time.  #2, it is easy to play w a 2 finger D or D7 chords, 2 or 3 finger C chords, and an easy Em chord.

I use a lot of 'boogie beat' blues, being a 4 count (open) G chord with my 2nd finger fretting the G string at the second fret on the 3 count.

For C chord, boogie sound,  I use a 2 finger chord: fretting d2 (Finger 2) and b1 (finger 1).  On the 3rd count, I fret g2 with my 3rd finger.

I find it easy to pick out a melody or add little ornaments in open G.  It would be nice to do  more and better, but my right hand and thumb arthritis is probably in time going to convert me to a harp player
