I'm no help,couldn't bring my self to drill holes in this '47 Jag cap so settled for twin piezo's glued inside.

Did consider mounting a pup on a bracket near the end of  the fingerboard,but still would have controls on the wooden box

Did you mount the piezos straight onto the cap?

Mounting  electric pickups and controls  onto metal guitar bodies (hubcaps, tin cans etc) and scratchplates works fine -  it's gives good electrical continuity for the earth (ground) and if wired properly should provide good screening.

Shopuld I ground the cap itself to the jack socket?

Just mounting the jack socket into a hole drilled thru' the steel hubcap will earth it, as long as it is a typical metal socket (not a one with a plastic "barrel" body).
