Hi all. Thought it would be nice to check in here if you're British. I know there's quite afew CBGers in the UK now because I've had quite a few emails from my blog. Time to come out of the woodwork and introduce yourself. How long have you been into CBGs? What got you started? What part of the UK do you live in? Do you know of any UK CBG events?

I'll kick it off. I'm David Ward (aka smojo) and live in West Yorkshire. Got into CBGs when I saw one on Ebay and bought it about 3 years ago. Started building and playing them. I have a blog going at

http://smojo-cigar-box-guitars.blogspot.com/ (sorry the hyperlink function doesn't seem to work)

Don't know of any events here yet but it would be cool if we could get one going sometime.

Hi all. I'm Dom, living in Lincoln. I'm on my 3rd build - currently head-scratching about how to strengthen the neck body joint to stop it bowing when tuned up. Also got a beautiful Macanudo box and a uke reso cone which I'm aching to get stuck into!

Got into all this madness much the same way y'all did. I too have to resort to eBay to find boxes.

Anyway, it's great to be here!

Hi Dom and welcome too. If your just making a guitar for slide you don't need to worry too much about bowing. What type of wood you using for the necks. If you use a decent hardwood like oak or beech or mahogany you shouldn't get too much bowing.
I can't remember what wood it is. It is a hardwood but not really strong like oak. The weak point seems to be at the body/neck join. The neck itself seems straight enough but the neck angle (relative to the body) changes when tuned up. Although I put in a neck and heel block to support the through-body section, I think it must be too thin where it joins the body and is capable of flexing at this point. I've just added a small flat piece to the back to restrict the movement between the neck & body. I'll tune it up again tomorrow when the glue hardens and maybe add a couple of screws to strengthen it.

It is mainly for slide so I'm not too bothered, but the action at the 12th fret goes from about 4mm to 7mm when tuned up.
Talking of the problems getting boxes, I can get anyone whos interested some sweet deals, I work near one of the few remaining cigar shops in scotland. Lady in the shop sells the empty boxes for 50p a go, gives the money to charity. The brands etc are pot luck - you get whats going - but if you want to chuck me a couple of quid for shipping, I'll get some posted out to you, as and when they are available.

And Im offering because I dont want em to go to waste, plus Im going to be leaning on all of you for plenty advice once I clear some spare time to get on with finishing my first box! Swear to god I spent one night cutting and sanding, the next day out of the blue Im in a new band and Ive got 30 songs to memorise. Im happy, but damn I need to get back and finish this thing!

Grab 'em while you can that's a great price and a generous offer. I have a decent stock at the moment but I'm sure some of the other guys will snap 'em up.
Hi All Mick here not a Brit but an Irish guy if thats ok (bloody paddy) I live in Dublin and just got into this by mistake really. I saw a link to a site showing instructions for an Altoids tin guitar. Now they are American so I used a tabacco tin instead and it worked really great. So while browsing youtube I came across the CBG now I'm hooked. I've been gathering bits and pieces since Xmas and they're hard to come across in Ireland but anyway I've started a Canjo today hope it works. Next is a CBG then a Reso CBG. So guys thats my story.........Talk soon.
Hi Mick and welcome. Hey don't apologise for being Irish. You gave us Rory Gallagher, Van the Man, U2 etc We'll forgive you for the Nolan sisters and Val Doonican. I've just been on the chase of Altoids and actually found a local sweet shop that stocks them so keep looking you might find some still.
Hi, Im the pieaddict. Im from preston but a student in manchester. Im currently making my first guitar, though i may not be the best player. First picked up a guitar due to seeing seasick steve on jools holland one year. I may be asking some questions as soon as i start building it.
Welcome Barrie. Hey you're not the guy who bought the cigarbox amp off me about a year ago are you? He was a student from Preston too.
No it wasnt me. May have a go at making an amp as well.
Hi Barrie,
what is it with all the northerners on here? Personally I'm only a recent movee to the north, and you have to prove a pure lineage back three generations to count yourself as a true northerner, but there still seems to be a top heavy bias to the British CBG community. It has been suggested it may be the air up here. Persoanlly, I would suggest that it is because northerners are too tight to shell out for a proper guitar, when "you could make one yourself for half the cost".
all the best,
Anthony

Anthony, in the light spirit of your comment and at the risk of offending our Southern brothers hear (no offence really) I'd say it's more to do with Northerners having a hard working, gritty background who find the no-nonsense CBG appealing. Maybe it's our sense of irony and down to earth humour and feeling closer to our roots than the soft Southern woosies who can't even make decent beer. We gave you Joe Cocker - they gave us Joe Pasquali. Ha :)
There has been a long standing history of black music in the north esp around wigan with it being the place for northen soul in the past. It has been put down to it being a deprived area in the past with the people involved in the music being able to indentify with the music from another poor area.

i am very northen though, i love slappies and babys eds from chippy. (quite a wigan thing). One of me fav days out is to buy bury black pudding from the market there then off to watch wigan rugby :-)
