Hi all. Thought it would be nice to check in here if you're British. I know there's quite afew CBGers in the UK now because I've had quite a few emails from my blog. Time to come out of the woodwork and introduce yourself. How long have you been into CBGs? What got you started? What part of the UK do you live in? Do you know of any UK CBG events?

I'll kick it off. I'm David Ward (aka smojo) and live in West Yorkshire. Got into CBGs when I saw one on Ebay and bought it about 3 years ago. Started building and playing them. I have a blog going at

http://smojo-cigar-box-guitars.blogspot.com/ (sorry the hyperlink function doesn't seem to work)

Don't know of any events here yet but it would be cool if we could get one going sometime.

I'm in West Sussex and work in engineering,I have built several guitars (including the "Les Pew" made from a church pew), and a couple of mando-guitars which I gig locally as a singer song writer.
I'm currently building a tenor ukulele as my first cigar box creation!
Hey, how youse doing?

I'm Chris; just built my first CBG out of a Montecristo box and a daud of wood I found in the cellar. I'm a long time afficianado of unusual instruments - based in Glasgow, so if anyone's in my neck of the woods and fancies making some noise give us a shout.

I noticed a few people saying they have trouble getting boxes - there's a place near me gives away the empties for a pound; I'll pick up a handful next time I'm passing, so if you're stuck let me know.
Welcome Chris,

I'd be interested to hear about what other types of unusual instruments you're into. One of the reasons I got involved in cigar box guitars was that I've long been fascinated by quirky instruments and music. I'm into old synths (can't afford to collect them but I built myself a Theremin) and I was inspired to explore a lot of other stuff when my partner bought me Bart Hopkin's book and CD set "Gravikords, Whirlies and Pyrophones".

Hmm, that book looks like it's worth investigating.

As well as the usual guitar/bass/keys triumvirate, I play... well, whatever's going really. I used to play Theremin with a band - a homemade one sounds like something I'd want a shot of. I've had a few synths, but never enough time to get to know them really. Ocarina, gopichand, udu, melodica, stylophone, a bit of sitar...

I actually found my way here because I was looking for advice on playing musical saws, and realised the cbg could be fun too.

It's a fantastic little tome but it's out of print and hard to get hold of these days (I know because I had a scare a year or two back when I thought I'd lost my copy).

It's worth checking out the Experimental Musical Instruments website at :- http://windworld.com/products-page/books--cds/ (I noticed a reference to the publishers of that book discovering a small number of unsold copies which they're putting on the market)

introducing myself,
I'm 39 I live in Northamptonshire, I've been into early porch dirty blues for a number of years but never knew it was played on a CBG until I saw SSS. Interested in attending events let me know where and when. I'm also jumping in at the deep end and building an electric fretless slide CBG despite not being able to play.
Welcome Alan, you're among friends here. Your CBG project sounds like an excellent way to start. Don't worry about your playing ability - it really is easy to have a lot of fun with these things. I'm an utterly cack-handed player but I was curious enough to have a try at building a fretless three-stringer with a biscuit tin as a body and I was just blown away by the sounds I could get from it. The result is that I'm now a guitar building addict.
