A video showing the results of some of my experiments in ebonizing different species of wood. The iron supplement I describe in the video is Ferrous Sulfate. The tablets I used were 65mg per tablet.

The tannin I used in the video is called Wine Tannin by the supplier. This particular brand of tannin is Hydrolyzed Gallotannin. It is available at wine making suppliers and home brew suppliers.

That's well done, good video's are not easy. You may know this already but I was also looking for something to color the wood but not obscure the grain and have been using Aniline dye. from this site

Cool - played around with the steel wool and vinegar mix a while back, but the tannin stuff is interesting...

Thanks for the comments, guys!

That's my next video, SmilingDog. This process effects the surface, obviously, but it does penetrate a little bit. I'm in the process of experimenting with different finishes over the ebonizing - to include an ebony stain, sanding sealer, shellac, polyurethane, varnish, and Tru-Oil. I'll also do a sanded finish with nothing else on my control piece of oak to judge the others on.

Great video! I was just wondering, how does it sand or is this something done at the very last stage of your finish before lacquer is applied? In other woods how deep does this penetrate the surface so I could fine sand the piece?
