I ran across an instrument called a stroh violin. it is like a violin with no resonating body. Instead it had a resonator and a horn attached to the bridge. A good site with photos is
http://www.notecannons.com/index.html look under STROVIOLS on the left around 4/5 the way down. Here are a couple of pics from the page.

The second pic shows very well how the resonator is attached to the bridge. This is more of a Stroh-guitar then a violin.

I wish I could hear this setup on a CBG, or a diddley bow!!

That is awesome! Il be in the shed....
I saw these a long time ago and I have wanted one ever since never seen a guitar version only fiddles.
I think what could be wild would be to get an old speaker like from a stereo, remove the coil and magnet and connect the sound cone to the bar-bridge arrangement. I think It might sound pretty good. Same principle but with a paper cone and no horn instead of a metal cone and a horn.

Basically a direct transfer of kinetic energy from the bridge to the paper sound cone.
there's something like that on ebay right now:

Wow. Holy cow that is classic...
I've seen acoustic instruments with horns coming out of the "box" or main body of the instrument. Would this really do anything to amplify the sound? Or is it purely cosmetic? Say for arguments sake, purely hypothetically of course, I was making a CBG and I drilled a hole in the side and bunged in a horn like that - does anyone know if this actually works?

All these pictures are making me horny.

Well, in your opinion, has the horn helped the tone and/or volume at all? I'm giving serious consideration to obtaining a rediculous looking horn and poking it into an otherwise perfectly good box. I obviously don't want to butcher the box and make it uncomfortable to play if it adds nothing to the sound.

I can see how the ones in the original post would work as they are hooked up almost directly to the bridge. I'm wondering if shoving a horn through a hole in a cigar box will be effective?

Wow!...I got to have a go at something like this , thanks for the picture.. gona try and get hold of some bits

anyone got an old gramaphone they dont want???

The bridge looks slightly incorrect to me, as wouldnt most of the vibrations go to the wooden pole?

On my resonator I have just built, each bridge type radically affects the sound through the resonator.

The bolt looks way cool in my video but it doesnt work. Might try some experiments on hinged bridges!

Thanks for all the comments... i'm definately in on this one.... and looking for bits!

For a cheap one I recon a road cone would work as your trumpet!

as they buskers use them as trumpets and they work a treat!

The sound generator could be a tin and thin lid (small paint can?).. or a maybe a tuna can ?

now let me think........

love this!
