Probably would, I've seen some photos with dots that look too large. Then again, I used 1/4 dots on a four string and they looked fine (except for the one that was a tad off center - boy can the eye pick up the slightest errors!)

shows 1/4" dots at 7, 12, 19  and 3/16" dots at 3,5,9, 15.

1/4" at the 24th is the hairiest, less than 3/8" space, 1/64" placement error north or south is very noticeable.  I do most of my layout with the help of a pair of cheap 3x reading glasses from the dollar store, tremendous help.

I put in a lot of thought before adding fret marker dots, everybody places them on the face of the fretboard in the time honoured tradition, why do this when the player can't see them if the guitar is held in the correct playing position?

My sight is slightly compromised, like everyone my age, and not really comfortable playing with glasses on. I eventually added 5mm dot markers on the edge of the neck where i could see them...clear enough to see without the specs...

My thoughts exactly Steve, having the dots on the front isnt going to be of assistance to the player. I've also read somewhere to use raised markers on the left hand side of the neck for playing slide.
