banjohangout.com has a lot of cookie tin banjos that wouldn't be any different that what you propose and they do sound good. I've got some cookie tins also and I haven't yet decided wether to make a guitar or a banjo first.
I bet it would, The metal body give a real unique tone
Hi Mike Huber:
The CBN discussion group called 'The Canjo Consortium' has a section on using cookie/cake tins as resonator boxes and some are squarish. I'm sure some of those are neck-thrus. You can check out their photos for ideas...

I'm definitely using candy tin now :-) ...Just gotta score me some tuners off of Ebay.... So does anyone know what those cool perforated metal sound-hole covers are and where to get em? Plumbing parts maybe?
Sink strainers from the local hardware store (or junk pile) work nicely. Also the craft stores usually have great big grommets that you can stick a piece of wire mesh inside before gluing or crimping it on the box. And CB Gitty has been stocking some nice looking little ones recently

I don't think you will really need sound holes on a cookie/cake/candy tin guitar, unless it is just for cosmetics.

I have found a number of suppliers for sound hole dressings, mostly suppliers of brass sailmakers' cleats/grommets an inch or so in diameter, and one for the 'grilled' mesh cover..
