* TPI: 18
* Kerf: .020"
* Blade Length: 8"
* Cutting Depth: 1-3/4"
* Cutting Direction: Push stroke

For $9. Not bad. Put you a depth guide on that and you have something.

I also bought the $6 35-350 .020" kerf backsaw, but the 8" Dovetail saw cuts very clean and easily it won over the two.
Thanks for the link. I had a small hobby saw but it misplaced, as most of my tools are now kids have a way of getting things to grow legs. Howlin Owln
Thanks for the tip - this is working like a charm. I also drilled a couple of holes in the blade and mounted a wood guide rail to act as a make-shift depth guide. Just cut my first fret board tonight in about 10 minutes once I had everything setup.
I followed Jon's lead. Pix for reference at:

Just ordered this! Can't wait to get it in. Irwin makes a backsaw that I usually use but I will give this one a shot.
Blade popped from spine first test cut. Owner of the hobby shop where I purchased refused me a refund, instead offering a useless exchange. He's lost my business. I'll probably make a stiffer "handle" from a couple of strips of 3/4" maple.
Go get you the Japanese Flush Cut Saw from Harbor Freight. .024" kerf which is .001" thinner than a StewMac style fret and will hold up to many fretting jobs. I suggest a jig to cut straight slots and a stop on the blade to control depth. See my blog page that talks about that.

at first these seem great, but they arent becuse the cut is to slim and the miter box is not tall enough....if you spend 20 bucks from stwerat mac for a real saw it will last and cut great!

i had that exact metir box and it was useless, got it from ebay and thought wow...how great!...till i tryed to use it : (
wes is right about the Japanese flush cut saw. I've fretted four necks with it so far. just cut down to the depth of the teeth and you're golden. I use a framing square as a guide. A few light pulls to make a groove, and a half dozen more to cut to depth. I paid $9.99 at the local Harbor Freight.
I own this same miter box and for some jobs its fine not useless by any means

I got tired of trying different saws and such,,,bit the bullet and bought the StewMac Japanese Fret Saw and Miter Box, its worth it...I learned along time ago that when it comes to tools quality is worth the extra$$$
