How much more difficult is a dog bowl resonator to build compared to a regular cbg? Thanks, Bill

Maybe not great luthiery, but I just cut a hole in a cheap guitar, laid on a bolt bridge and strung it up. sounded pretty good.

I would not say it is more difficult, maybe just different. The biggest thing is to do all your measuring in advance, because once you install the dog bowl, you can't move it later so you may be stuck with a fixed bridge position that you can't move if you need to adjust the intonation.

With a regular build, you have the option of using a floating bridge so you can slide it fore and aft if you need to.

I have built over 200 dog dish resonator guitars with FLOATING BRIDGES and sold them all. Very easy, just build your own boxes so that you can get a 3 inch thickness. Then build your neck so that it goes down under the dog dish and goes all the way to the end of the box. I build mine with an adjustment for the string height, it's a set screw on the back toward the end that changes the neck angle to make the strings lower or higher.

Here is a drawing showing dimensions for a dog bowl reso with a 650 scaie length

I hope not too much harder. I'm starting on two of them right now and my biggest problem is finding a box big enough for the bowl. I had good luck building a box from scratch for a uke, so I'm going to go that route. It adds a lot more labour, but I'll end up with the dimensions I need/want.

The other tricky part is attaching the neck. If you are used to doing stick-throug cbgs, you'll have to do that differently. I'm planning on gluing the heel to the box with two dowels drilled through the box into a wood block on the inside. Someday I'll attempt a proper mortise tenon joint, but not this time. I've also used threaded inserts in the heel and bolted on from the inside. There's a hundred ways to skin this cat.

Hi Rick

Thank  you for your e mails.

I want to build a box but  did you every make one out of an old beat up guitar. can you give me some ideas, I want a pick up in it.

I have an old beat up acoustic here, but I was thinking of cutting it in half to keep the tone bright. Can I installe a cone from parts from a hardware store?

This is my slide guitar playing on a song I wrote

Here's something to consider:

I was working on some sketches for my reso build and my daughter (4 yrs old) pointed at the sound holes and asked what they're for. I told her they're to help the sound get out of the guitar. She looks at the drawing again and points at the bottom corner of the box and says, "You should put another hole there for a cup holder." My daughter is clearly a genius. Play the thing lap style and you have a perfect place to hold your beer.

You're daughter might just be the bright future we've all been waiting for mate.

Hi, if you are building a CBG dog bowl its not any harder bit more work and thought to put into it. If you allow room for the bowl to float in its hole just slide it about to intonate it. If its a lap slide you should not need much if  any compensation.

Here's a photo of a conversion I did some time ago. Yes a lot of work, fitting cone, reinforcing body ect, to do the job correctly.

Cheers Taff

Great job Taff. It looks wonderful.

With the exception of adding actual resonator cones, anytime I've used dog bowls or paint lids, it has taken away from the favorable tones and only added a trashiness to the sound.  I just built a paint lid guitar and gigged with it twice.  Now I'm regretting the lid.  I should have kept the wonderful cigar box lid intact.
