Since 2017 has started, I've been trying to learn a song tab a week, just to add new songs to my repertoire, and challenge myself. I've learned that, on songs with lyrics, you can use the lyrics to know where you are, for example, Amazing Grace. How about instrumental songs, like Ashokan Farewell? What are your thoughts/approach for learning tabs? http://www.cigarboxguitar.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/AshokanFar...

Furthermore, how do you achieve this chord. 7 on top and bottom, 9 on the middle string. They expect you to have fancy finger work!

That one is relatively easy: you barre your index finger across all three strings at the 7th fret, and use your ring finger to catch the middle string at the 9th fret.

Try it...;-)

Another way would be to place your index finger on the lowest string at the 7th fret, your second finger on the highest string at the 7th fret, and your ring finger on the middle string at the 9th fret. It'll basically have the inverted triangle shape of a D chord in first position, just not as scrunched together.
When learning tabs, it does help to have some previous playing experience, as well as having learned the CAGED system, and how to make proper barre chords. This will allow you to figure out fingerings from what you already know. 3-string tabs are definitely simpler than 6-string, and it also helps to have heard the song before. If you've never heard the song, usually a quick YouTube search will get you several versions of the song in its original key. Many times, there are detailed instructional videos available, either for purchase, or free on YouTube, that will show you exactly how to play particular songs on 6-strings.
Thanks. Are there any lessons for that here? I'm somewhat self taught. I've always played slide.
Would learning the chords help, before getting into tabs?

There is a great video lesson by Justin Johnson on "Stormy Monday". It's a good little challenge and a cool tune. He explains it well in the video, you will like this one, I think. It's on youtube.

Have you ever played 6-string?
Did you scroll down this page, and play the MP3?:

Yes, I did. I just wondered if learning chords first would help me make better sense of tabs.
Only slide. I tried to learn the regular way, but could never get lessons, and no one told me the the proper way to learn or start.
I actually considered setting my six string up like this. http://www.cigarboxnation.com/m/discussion?id=2592684%3ATopic%3A256...
