Will using a looper help me learn to jam with others better?

Will it be a fun toy?

Do you have or want one?

I don't like delays in getting the music going.  Some, (bemuzic) can do a quick, smooth and entertaining transition from starting the looper to really having the song going.   Some folks... well, not so quick or smooth.

Are they cheating?   I think music snobs would say so.  I don't want to be a music snob, but I do like my music honest and straight forward.

Can you correct and enlighten me?

John,This was my intro to the world of loopers.  love the limitless possibilities for a solo performer.  When you don't have time for band practice, but time to work out your solo work, you can really layer your music.  the best, Wichita Sam

I know that there will be doubters and purists who will be horrified at the use of loopers , but with a bit of rehearsal time and thought , they can be a really relative tool . My current band The Sin City Slickers are two piece , CBG and drums , we use a looper for drones or a subtle second guitar track to give a much fuller sound . Also , as we both work awkward shifts on differing patterns it gives me (guitar) the chance to work on songs if my drummer is unavailable , in much the same way as a drum machine . Further to the "time to get going" post , we pre load the pedal with whatever and when we play it's a simple one click to start right into the track so with a bit of planning they can be a seamless part of your sound . We also on new material jams , use it as an easy recorder , which can be engaged with a foot tap so we don't loose a new groove while we mess with recorders etc , hope this helps .btw the looper of choice for me is a Digitech Jamman

I've seen a few youtube videos of very effective use of a looper, https://youtu.be/jMNIvLiCnw8  and using a tool well is not cheating (shane's 15 min video that went viral used a drum track, no claims he cheated).  I have seen some open-mic disasters where the performer spent so much time setting multiple loops that all play continuously that you are ear-sore by the time they start their 'feature' part.

Learning to jam with others takes practicing jamming with others.  You don't just "wing it" improvising, the chord sequence has to follow a pattern such as 12 bar blues...

I own a boss rc300 looper and I thoroughly enjoy having it. In no way is it cheating and, yes, it will make you better at jamming with other people. You can plug a cbg into one and use the box as a percussion/rhythm tool and make a simple bass/rythm track and play over that as you sing and perform leads. My Dad has a simple looper he uses it is very basic but he really likes the way it works. I'll find out what model it is and post it for you. But, in the meantime, YouTube is always a great place to go to see which model is best for you. To hell with music snobs, they don't get it anyway!!

I think I wanted to be talked out of  a looper.   It is not working.   I want to try one to do some harp jams with and put down 2-3 layers of a song.  I am currently too cheap and Santa is unlikely to come through on this.

Thanks, guys.

Hey Unc, as I mentioned, I've got two Ditto loopers. My second one is the fancier one but the simpler Ditto 1 works fine and I don't use it much. I'd be happy to send it your way to try your hand at it. It does require a 9v power supply and I don't have the little booklet but that can be found online. Let me know and I'll get it in the mail.

Unc here's the link to the owners manual for the Ditto looper

I think it's perfect for what you're talking about doing. I've still got your address so I can get it mailed if you want to give it a try. The manual has info about what power supply you'd need since it doesn't take batteries.

You're too cool!

Oh, btw, this young lady uses her looper to wonderful effect Plus, she's just an inspiration to watch. You must do yourself a favor and check her out.

Yup, Erasmo.  That is clear now.   I think it may help my harp playing to lay down the tracks and play.   On the harp topic.   I've been listening to the Memphis Jug band.  They have a  harp player named Noah Lewis.  He is certainly my fave harp player.   Some of their stuff is on youtube and Pandora.

If you have a mic that can take 1/4" jack, like the one cbgitty offers, you can get away with using an instrumental looper.  It's not the cleanest sound, but it's not terrible.
