I am trying to use a mini humbucker and a piezo together and only using one input jack. I have not had any success at trying this. If anyone has been successful at this ,,,,your input would be much apreciated.

Hi Jim,

There has been a discussion on using multiple piezos here http://www.cigarboxnation.com/group/cbgwiringelectronics/forum/topi...

Nice looking CBGs you have made :o)

Hey fellas, can we talk about the difference between stereo and mono 1/4 jacks and what the best application is for cbgs and piezos, etc.? I have bags of both jacks and am using the mono ones for the double piezo pups that I am wiring, but want to know what I can do with the stereo ones.... (Sorry, I know I botched that sentence)
Thanks David I will check it out.

If I can't find mono jacks I just use stereo and wire it like a mono. I have found no good use for stereo jacks in a cbg.

Hi Lana Rae,

I have used them with active circuits for regular electric guitars when the battery is also wired to the socket so it acts like a regular mono output but the insertion of the plug switches the circuit on - this gives an idea of what I mean http://www.artecsound.com/pickups/electronics/wiring/wiring-E01a.jpg

I came across this site where some of the good people use stereo sockets for mono output because they think it grips the plug better.http://www.guitarnoise.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=47458

Now you have the wiring bug maybe you will start adding active circuits to your CBGs ;O)

Regards,
David

Hi David,,Do you have a drawing of wiring 2 piezo's in paralell. Also is there any trick in getting them not to feedback???

Ahhhh, I see David! That makes perfect sense.... or at least I think it does. I plan to get more fancy with wiring as I go along here so perhaps I'll start doing those on my more complex builds since I am not limiting myself to CBGs..... and yes, indeed, since I've been bitten by the wiring bug I am feeling very bold.... and loving every minute of it!

Thanks so much fellas - y'all sure are helpful group of folks!
Hi Jim,

For wiring in parallel all I do is twist all the red wires from each piezo together as one hot wire contact point and then twist all the black wires together to give one ground/earth contact point. These can then be substituted as a two wired pickup in any of the wiring schematics listed above. Make sure you stick some extra glue on the piezo disc and wires before you move them too much or the solder points on the piezos ping off.

I have never had an unexpected problem with feedback (I get it if I mount the speaker in the CBG and turn the volume up too much but no real surprise there) All I do is put a big blob of "serious glue" to fix the disc in place (I don't know if you can buy that in the USA but essentially it is like a silicone sealant when it dries). Others have tried numerous ways - if you do a forum search (Top clear box between Discussion forum and featured discussions - the search key is almost invisible along side) you will find lots of ideas.

Regards,
David

Hi David,,,I been following the conversations goin on using 2 piezo's vs one. But I never picked up on the advantage of using 2 other than having a backup. Could you please shed some light on this for me?????

I wired a single coil pickup and piezo together using a simple passive mixer circuit rather than a switching circuit. Basically, each pickup has it's own pot so that I can control it's presence in the mix that goes out the jack to the amp. Basically, you need an equal amount of fixed resistance (I use 1kohm) in series with the hot lead of each pickup (between the pickup and it's pot), and then you can just wire the out put of each pot (I used 500kohm audio taper pots) straight to the hot lead of the output jack. I can turn the piezo all the way down for nice single coil sound, I can turn the single coil down for a jangly piezo sound, or I can mix it anyway I want in between. One of my favourite tones is to have both turned up all the way. Great mix of highs and lows with that!

FWIW, I make my own pickups using coils I scavenge out of wall wort transformers and small but heavy duty alnico magnets I ordered in bulk from mouser. I've found that pickups made from the coils out of 12v wall worts output as much signal as a standard single coil pickup. The 12v coils are also just the right width for a three string. I use three magnets, and then just wrap the thing in duct tape (I use red duct tape so it looks cool), and insert it about and inch or so up from the bridge. Works great! Much easier than winding your own, and much cheaper and much more mojo than buying a prewound pickup.
Thank you so much for all the info. Hopefully after I read it a few times I will start to digest the info....

Hi David,,,I completed my piezo/humbucker with one jack and tele style switching. This is what is happening,,,When the humbucker is being played and I switch to just the piezo,,I get feedback. I believe the reason is because when I switch to the piezo,,,it sees more volume initially than the piezo can handle and then feeds back. It is almost like it needs some type of buffer. Have you ever encountered this situation. I have the piezo mounted in a oak block.

Hi Jim,

I usually go with 500k for humbuckers but only because it is what I do with my electric guitars. If you are adding a tone pot what I have noticed is that although it works well on altering the tone of a magnetic pickup it has little effect on the piezo (different pickup properties which send me to sleep if I try to read the theory behind it all). Also when soldering a capacitor in place they can easily be fried by the heat so put a crocodile clip or similar on the leg between the solder point and the body of the cap to pretect it. Audio or logarithmic pots work best because the logarithmic scale means the response to the ear is spread over the whole 1 to 10 of the dial. If you have linear pots they will still work OK but you find you dial past 5 before you notice any audio response.

David
