I don't know if they are still available in the states lawntrout,but i've used roofing nails sucsessfully  before,drill a slightly undersize hole and epoxy

I have previously used an old wheat penny, or buffalo nickel as strap buttons, drill a hole in them and screw it on.

Don't drill a hole in a Buffalo. Silver solder a brass screw to it and you got the Buff or the Native American showing,your choice. I have done this and it works. Propane torch,silver solder and flux are only equipment required. You have to have alligator clip or something to hold screw in place while soldering or the torch will blow the screw over or out of place. I would send photo,but I have given them away to friends. Just a thought for next time.

Just use screws with large heads, or I've used a few old drawer handles.  Every time I throw away furniture I remove all the knobs, handles, hinges etc.

I found some mini drawer pulls and closet door glides at the hardware store. I use the mini drawer pulls all the time.

I really like them. They are not much cheaper than a real strap hanger, but they look good. The glides are really nice on something where you are using chromed tuners, stainless sink strainer hole liners etc. It keeps everything on a silver colour scheme.
