I have been playing in a band for the last 3 months and started with the slandered open G but have switched open A and really like it. I am still using the middle 4 strings from a 6 string pack of 10's I find I can get some real metal sound out of "Janet" my guitar as well as some blues sounds as well. So my question is this anyone else playing this tuning out there or am I the only freak out there.

I use A ,E ,a ,c #.

I prefer the 1513 also cause the chord patterns are shared across the keys...any key tuned 1513. I can actually sing a little in A.

You're right! (I just checked the video.)

He does the Muddy Waters lick in an open G tuning with the 3rd on top and then tunes open A like you said--with the root on top and bottom. It occurs to me that you could do both of these tunings using the same 4 strings out of the middle of a six pack.  I don't know if that's a consideration.

Already do that. Just up or down for one or the other. Lol. Show me paint the fence danialsun

I like it! You do end up with lots of Ee strings Left over though

Be a freak. If you can't be a freak, be a freak anyway.

Lol lol bbbb

I've used E-A-E-A, one step down from Open B.

I've also used A-E-A-C♯, one step up from Open G.

Wolf what tuning do you like most and why? I use the open A for lead parts and open G for rhythm. What's the EAEA sound like and usage?

When not using Open G, I tend towards Open D: A-D-F# and A-D-F#-A.

E-A-E-A has been useful, at least for me, in playing repetitive backup stuff.

It's just derived from A-E-A-E-A-C♯.

Aea on a 3 string works a treat on my black Cohina
I also use this on the odd thing CBG with and extra bass
String. Works exceptionally well.

Isn't this what is called devils tuning on a guitar
As its kills your guitar neck due to the high tension?

Sounds great try low C tuning too on a 4 string.
Great for bending strings.

Bug,

I thought the "Devil's Tuning" had to have the 3rd of the chord on the high string (as in E-a-c# or A-E-a-c#). I assumed it was because you could barre that tuning up 3 or 5 (or even 7) frets and not change the underlying harmony--thereby introducing some really funky extensions into your chord. You can rationalize all those crunchy notes as minor 7ths, raised 9ths, 13ths, etc.

That said, it may be that it's the devil because it ruins your instrument neck. A good aggressive tuning can certainly do that. (Also can break a lot of strings!)

Do you (or anybody listening in) have any documentation for where the name came from?
