complete novice here just starting out, ive a question for all of ye!

ive read that people convert alot of  regular guitar tabs to a 3 string cbg by dropping and substituting some chords! i know where to get chords for songs online for a regular 6 string guitar but how do i convert tabs to suit my 3 stringer?

ive zero music theory so can you explain as best you can, like explaining to a 2year old!lol

appreciate any feedback thanks!

The root note is the note that gives a chord its name. And no it doesn't have to be the lowest note in the chord, although often times it is. My favorite chord is two note power chord and consists of a root and a fifth. Usually the root is the lower note, but you can also have the fifth as the lower note. Most three note power chords are root fifth root. On my three stringer I play chords that have a root on the middle string also, usually fifth root fifth. and sometimes from low to high fifth root major third. When someone talks about root notes it should be about a chord or scale and not the key of a song. Haven't gotten to balls to the wall yet as I haven't played in a couple of weeks but im sure I've heard the song before. Last time I picked up my gitty i was trying to pick my way through today by the smashing pumpkins cause I know I used to play it on my 6 stringer and on bass years ago and I've always wanted to give it a try on my cigar box.

thanks Jeff, clarifies alot. when you say 5th and major third do you mean the I,II,III, etc scale?

PS looking forward to hearing Smashing Pumkins keep em coming!

Not sure if this is right so can someone clarify!

I was just checking tabs on that Ultimate-Guitar website and on the panal to the left there is a button called TRANSPOSE with an up and down arrow!

It seems which ever key the song is in you can hit that button either up or down till its in the key that suits! for example if song is in C but you are tuned D you just hit the up arrow up twice half step at a time so one full step to D, then all the chords are rewriting in the key of D.

So convert those to suit 3 or 4 string and your good to go?

almost sure im right but and someone check to comfirm!

thanks!

Yes. I do that all the time. Useful to transpose to a key easier to sing in. Remember this function only works for chords. If there are any tabs you will have to transpose them yourself. Same principle though; if you're transposing up 2 semitones, move the tabs up 2 frets...

ya just realised that now same with tabs! great!

So im right in saying Am one full step down is G?

Want to try HURT by Johnny Cash its in the key of Am

chords are Am,C,D,F,G

can anyone help with the above question? i can transpose keys in normal, #, and flats but cant fully understand Am? in major or minor any scale i see has them all either major or minor there is no G only Gminor or Gmajor? so is Am it possible to play in the key of G?

or is the only thing to do is disregard major or minor when finding key of a song?

appreciate any help!

thanks

Sounds like you're getting a good handle on this stuff. One full step down from Am is Gm, but in the case of a G,d,g tuned 3 stringer you'd just play the open G chord since there's no major or minor in there. The chords would work out to G, Bb, C, Eb, and F. So that's Open(G), 3rd fret(Bb), 5th fret(C), 8th fret (Eb) 10th fret(F) There are other ways to get some of these chords but this is the simplest way if you're just starting.

geez that was quick thanks Jim, was kinda thinking it might not be possible cos of the minors so basically your going from key of A to key of G which is a full step down on each chord?

thanks again JIm.

yes i hnow it is possible to play minor by barring bottom two strings and top string two frets up,  but playing slide kinda difficult especially as im just starting out! but ill get there eventually!

Yup just a full step down on every chord. The tricky thing, if you don't know theory, is that some notes are only 1/2 step apart. For example, A down to G is a whole step drop but F down to E or C down to B is only a half step. Even not knowing theory you can see this on a piano keyboard where the white notes (natural) and the black notes (flat or sharp) follow a pattern that has two white notes together on the B to C interval and the E to F interval. Good luck and now we need to hear your version of "Hurt" !

Just finished learning hurt played it in ful last night for the wife she seemed impressed seeing I only got into cbgs lately! I'll refined it another day or two and I might even upload the video if I grow the balls for it! Lol
On average how longs does it take ye to learn full song? Must say I kinda surprised myself was only a day or two once I figured out the right chords!
