Yeah Wayfinder, like I said I've got 6 of them now but the one in the vid is what I use the most. $15 at a yard sale and it was already sharp enough to use right away. I paid more for some of the others that aren't nearly as nice but I was still trying and erroring then. Keep on looking!

Thanks Wayfinder! I'm glad to know there's another drawknife fan here. I first saw one being used by Roy Underhill on his woodworking show and that's what made me want one along with the shaving horse that I made from his plans.. It wasn't till I moved to WV that I was able to find any decent old drawknives and now have about six in my collection. It's one of my most used tools.

Yeah Bluesheart. That's a shaving horse that I built based on plans in one of Roy Underhill's woodworking books. This is what they used for shaving wooden roof shingles. When I get around to making another one It'll have a more slender work platform so I don't have to re-position the neck as often. It works great!

Yeah Ron, I've still got my first banjo build. Used a router on the sides of the neck and the back is flat. I got used to it but whenever I pick it up now I think - "well maybe you have made a little progress" If you think going back to the old ways can be called progress, that is!

Jim,

Yeah, some good stuff! I posted that just as the 15-minute caption popped up. Which is no time at all, especially when trying to get that curve "just right" for the 4th time ;-). Power tools are great helpers, after you know what you're doing. I have a number of projects that show my particular evolution with em ;-).

Yeah Ron, can you smell what CB Nation is cooking? Real time, in case you missed my little caption, was about 15 min. Not too bad if you factor in what setting up a router with the proper bit would take. Oh yeah,Stevesteve, my Luddite tendencies still don't rule out power tools. And as for thinkin' time - my wife claims I spend more time staring at a piece of wood scratchin' my head than anything else!

I love my spokeshave too. Don't get me wrong there is always room at the bench for the power plane, router and bandsaw but sometimes they take off too much too quickly. A hand tool gives me thinking time when wood working (and boy do I need it).
Cheers,
Steve

Notice that old school only took under 4 minutes. It's like those cooking shows...
