Knife blade blues slide technique certainly goes further back than Cedell Davis:

Most blues histories repeat the above story from Handy's own diary and his recollections reported to friends and colleagues, and the fact that Davis undoubtedly heard similar techniques when he grew up in the Delta region in the 30's.

Thanks for the link to Mance Lipscomb; hadn't heard of him!

I thought Cedell Davis's knife slide was something unique (Fat Possum Records clearly thought so); obviously there were other old bluesers using the same technique many years before. I'll see who else I can find out there!
