What would cause this?

Correct! Some of these just pop eventually. May not even take a humidity change for doing so. It sure is a nice instrument. Is it a ukulele? which tuning?

It's simply called a screw clamp, it is an old design that still performs in the time of plastic ratchet type clamps. The screws don't have to be tightened evenly, so it will clamp odd shapes and angles. http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=18917

That is a woodworking clamp, not sure what it is called but my mom has a bunch of them she uses fro misc. wood and basket projects.

Das Ding mit Geweih hat eine "reversed resonator bridge", bei der die Saiten nach oben hin gegen den Bördelrand der 10L-Öldose drücken. Tja, und ein PU sitzt davor.
