You have some of the most beautiful pieces of art I've seen. A very inventive imagination in the hands of a master wood craftsman is a seriously beautiful thing!

I'm awed and dumbstruck by your creations, there are no adequate words to describe how beautiful and inventive they are...

Scott, took a look at your work while I was here. A very impressive collection of instruments. As much art as they are instruments.

Thanks Scott for the comment on my headstock. I looked at a lot of dulcimer pics to get the right look for it.

Cut the fiddle box down on Wednesday, and that was very scary - laying my baby right on the table saw! Retstore the internal supports and put her back together this weekend - at least that is the plan.

As for rosin on the strings, I clean mine off with a wine cork. You can make a slight nick in the edge or just use it like it comes from the bottle. Slide it up and down a few times and it is clean enough. If you have really built-up gunk, you can use a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol on a cloth - but watch out. One drip eats up your finish on your fiddle. I only ever tried that on a rental fiddle and learned my lesson!

Excellent news about the rosin working -- and the free strings! How did you finagle that one? I'll have to find out who my local rep is and start with the schmoozing!

Just finished up a batch of dulcimers, so I'm working this week on refining the fiddle. I hope to have it really playable in the days ahead.

About the rosin: it is a hard cake, but sometimes you need to score it a bit with something sharp to break up the surface so the dust comes off on the bow. You should be able to "pluck" your bow and see a little cloud of rosin coming off.

For a brand new bow, rosin the hell out of it. Some people buy a cheap chunk of rosin and pulverize it to dust. Loosen up the hairs on the bow as floopy as they will go and run them through the dust. Tighten back up, whack off the excess and you are as rosined up as you can ever get.

Sometimes folks wash all the old built-up rosin off an older bow and re rosin it as above - buys you some time between rehairs. I've never rehaired my bow and it is four years old, but it gets only light use.

Hope that helps. Did you use standard fiddle strings?

You must know some fiddler who can make you a recording. It is unbelievably beautiful. Where's the pickup?

Wow, thanks for sharing the work of those fiddlers with me! THey are new for me.

The fiddle is a harsh mistress, but the sooner you start the sooner you'll make sounds that don't make your family force you to the basement. I prefer to play down there anyway, now.

I like your banjos too thats what i play mostly is banjo.

That old looking canjo I painted with black gesso and sanded it down. Then I stained it with a driftwood Minwax that was in the basement. It matches that old tin pretty well. I find you have to tune the tin-tars a bit higher for a better sound - and better is a relative term! That one is a little harsh to my ear.

I don't know about electric violin at all. I play steel strings, just cheapo Red Labels. I "upgraded" to synthetic cores, and they sounded like hell. So I switched back. that's on my "real" fiddle. The cigar box fiddle needs more work, gotta wait for the community shop to reopen so I can get some real tools. Steel strings for that one, too. Good luck on your fiddle project? I can't remember, do you play already?
