Tuning a thumb piano?

Started this discussion. Last reply by chevytrucking Nov 1, 2012. 1 Reply

We've made a couple of thumb pianos, one from a cigar box, one from a gold pan.  They sound okay but are not tuned to any scale. The tines are made from fish wire and were cut to sizes convenient to…Continue

What are some typical finishes for the neck?  I've got a CBG and a fretless bass - it was fretted, now it's not.  Something to keep the grime off, maybe add a little color.  Is basic wood stain…Continue

I get used necks from my local guitar shop for misc CBG/instrument projects. I can figure out the scale on most because I can simply measure them from the original guitar/bass etc. However, I just…Continue

"I don't know if it would work for you or not, but I bought a tiny little clip on guitar tuner on ebay the other day. It works off the vibration of the neck or headstock. It has a chromatic function, as well as standard guitar tuning. I only…"

"Tru-oil has become my new favorite finish. If I'm doing something I really want slick and smooth, I'll apply the last 2 coats of Tru-Oil with some 0000 steel wool, depending on the wood. I don't use it on oak or any other…"

Tuning a thumb piano?

We've made a couple of thumb pianos, one from a cigar box, one from a gold pan.  They sound okay but are not tuned to any scale. The tines are made from fish wire and were cut to sizes convenient to the size of the box/pan.  How would I adjust them to a scale?  Trial and error?  Would I adjust the length of the tines with them all in place or do it one at a time?  Any advice or links?ThanksSee More

"Thanks for the advice, I went with the Tru Oil method on top of stain and put Tru Oil on the fretless to protect it."

"I like it fast & simple. I normally finish my necks, etc. with 4-5 light coats of Deft clear gloss. Fingerboards: sometimes tung oil, sometimes just olive oil."

"It depends on what kind of wood you're talking about. If it's rosewood, I use Johnson's paste wax occasionally, and that's it. Rosewood doesn't need to be finished. If it's maple, then the finishes described by the…"

"You'll most likely get lots of replies to this thread, but generally speaking, just about any wood stain is fine for coloring the wood. As for a finish, my favorite finish is Tru-Oil. It's made for gun stocks, but it's magnificent on…"

"For the entire time I've played guitar I've always just used lemon oil on the fret board.  My latest build I'm finishing the fret board with some Minwax Tung Oil Finish. It pops the grain better and with hopefully seal it…"

"Naw, just yankin' yer chain. Like wormil said, I like heat, then Naphta as it tends to evaporate quickly and not damage the finish on the box"

"+1 for a hairdryer. You couldd also try using a pencil eraser to gently rub off any residue."

"Heat, then if you need a little help, naphtha. I peel as I'm heating because the glue will reach a point where it releases from the box before the paper but if it gets too hot, it will release from the paper and stick to the box."
