I have been using gesso, acrylic paint and paint pens with an exterior/interior polyurethane varnish with pretty good results

Change the Piezo(s) to a Dynamic Mic head (Radio Shack $9.99) or use the mic from an old CB Radio handle. Loud as a PO'ed wife!

Thanks for the comment Michael. The piezos pick up noise when the box is thumped or tapped, however they don't seem to do much with the string vibration. I am guessing that the purse handle is a cheap wood that isn't effectively transferring the vib…
