J. Tom Butler of Palo Pinto County TX, ca. 1900s and his Cello

Every December the past few years, my band has played in Palo Pinto TX, about 70 mi west of Ft Worth.  It's county seat for the county of same name even though it's unincorporated.   But it has quite a history as you can see from this small sample here.   J. Tom Butler must have been some musician.  This "cello" he built from scrap wood and what seems to be bailing wire (or piano strings) is a gem of Americana folk art and cigar box greatness.  The bridge is flat, not rounded, so I doubt he…See More

Knick knacks to embellish your creations --Vintage Guitar May'16 issue

For those that follow or subscribe to Vintage Guitar Magazine, or those that don't, be sure to check Will Kelly's article in the May '16 issue--he deals with things like buttons and other little items you can find at sewing shops, crafts shops etc to use as string guides, switch handles, knob additions, etc.  Good ideas overall, but proof positive the values of the whole DIY Cigar Box movement are becoming more and more mainstream.     I might add another kind of store to find great things to…See More

How many instruments have you built so far?
as of 12-27-15, fifteen if you count a somewhat failed tremolo box I got plans from in Vintage Gtr Magazine
What do you find most interesting about cigar box guitars? (If you do not enter something meaningful here, your membership may be rejected).
Most 6 string players rely on power chords using only a couple strings. So why bother with buying a 6 string guitar, esp when everyone else seems to have one? Do it yourself, it's different and fun and who knows what you'll invent?
