Transducer hanky roll

I encased my between two pieces of gaffer tape. Its like duct tape but my cloth like. It does a nice job of taken out extra noise. You cant hear a lot of hand movement when its actually playing.

Could just be a bug in the system or something. I dont mind getting emails as it helps me keep up with the site when i dont have time to wander around on it. If you don't want to receive emails from…

Attaching the neck to the box

What I do is measure out and mark the part you need to cut out. Then take a small saw and cut down the depth you need in in slots about 1/2 inch apart. Then take you chisel and pry out each chunk you…

There is a method of playing a fretless that a lot of people dont know. One way to get a fuller sound on the strings when you play is to get used to fretting with your fingernail. For some of us it means we have to stop biting our nails but it DOES WO…

Dennis, Everything is relative.... is a cookie tin banjo going to sound like a "regular" banjo?... of course not. But, cookie tin banjos and CBGs are smaller volume and won't have the same acoustic properties as a manufactured instrument... and tha…

I'm new here and a bit bewildered at how everybody uses those box-shaped CBs and Matza boxes and now this tin box. To me, what they have in common is poor acustic qualities, that's why, I guess, nearly everybody goes electric. Is that right? The see…

Thanks guys! As far as chording goes, Ive had the same problem in a way. I know the form and the placement, but my fingers just seem to kill all vibration. Sounds more like Im mutiing it rather than chording. Sliding and single notes work fine. May…

The two banjos sounded relatively equivalent in volume. A taller bridge, with corresponding adjustment to the neck angle, might help on the volume.

if that is 5 strings tune it in g and just use standard banjo chord forms, I play a 3 string cookie tin banjo so I only have 2 strings to chord on. What I do is tune it g and d and play partial chords like it is a fiddle. Works pretty well that way.…

Louder = thinner top.... chords = open tuning.....

One of my fellow followers of The Daily Frail blog has built himself a cookie tin banjo. He was asking for advice on making it louder and also help in making chords on a fretless neck. He has a really neat design of putting the tuners inside. Sligh…

I dont know what that stuff is theyre trying to pass off as "country" these days. They stopped playing country music on the radio back in the 80's. Hip Hop is fine when its filtered properly. Tom Waits is the best beat boxer Iv ever heard ;)

Welcome Alyson! Ive been playing frailing banjo for about 3 years now. I used to have a chip on my shoulder about bluegrass people, but Im warming up to them. haha We all need to set a date or something for the summer maybe and have a jam session so…

Just listened to you audio of the hack job sounds good to me. Sounds a little like an asian type instrument also because of the tin for the bridge, but I like it.

I bought a one string pickup from Philip Eggers at cigtone.com for around $15.00 including shipping. I think I'll build my diddley bow useing your basic body style, with a large eye bolt on a wood base to raise it high enough a thumb screw for the nut.
If you would like cheap pickups and good ones check out cigtone.com he's cheaper than anyone, except if you use a piezo pick up. I have a friend who built a solid body guitar, used a forsner bit drilled down in the back untill there was just a thin piece of wood where the bridge sits. he used hot glue in the hole put in the piezo used hot glue over it. You wouldn't believe the sound.

Thomas was wondering if the tin box just sit on the body held in place by the strings. If so have you thought about removeing the thum screw bridge raiseing the front edge of the tin to act as the bridge. I think you might get a resonator sound.

Good day my new friend, I had been working on an idea along the same line as you hack job, but for a diddley bow. How good does the hack job sound. I have heard diddley bows with a high E string with the tin but never set up like a regular cbg. I also have a friend interested.

I was thinking of a diddley bow along the same lines, but now that I see yours I guess I'm going to have to borrow that Ideea if it's alright with you. Your build is very kool. Besides I have a cousin who thinks he has to have expensive guitars to make music.
