I am building another COG and was wondering about how high the strings need to be, how far down the nut needs to be, and best tool to round the guitar neck?

Korrigan replied to Michael Graves's discussion seeking advice
"I don't know how high the strings need to be either, that's why I love threaded rod, bolts and set screws and carry these in my guitar case: I can go high for slide, low for fingering or in between as a compromise for both. Using a…"

"Hi, I see a lot of people quote string heights that are fine on a full acoustic or electric guitar, but may not work well on CBGs. I always set up a bit higher. A couple of reasons, without going into it too deeply is, 3-4 string CBG's do not…"

"Got it.  All I build are fretless, I keep the strings high.  0.030" seems a bit low. Mine are around 4mm (0.16") at the nut and 5mm (0.20") at the end of the fretboard. "

"well I'm going to have it fretless. So I'm wondering about the height from the strings down to the board. i hope that makes sense I'm new to trying to build these, sorry about the confusion."

"Your post is confusing.  Are you talking about the distance from the strings to the fretboard?"

wanting to know about fretless setup

I am wanting to do a fretless guitar next.  I was wondering if putting my strings at about .030" off the top of the neck would be good?  I am wanting that old delta blues sound and have been told this is the way to go.  I am taking my time on my second build and was fixing to get my parts in where I can really start to building.  The pre-fretted boards I can buy are at 20" long.  I did a layout in AutoCAD and saw that the fret board seems to go a little to far into my cigar box.  I was wanting…See More

"Pick is spot on for the bridge, the best answer for neck shaping would start with a question, as we all tend to do things a little different based on the answer...question....what power tools do you have available to you? This question has come up…"

Titch the Clown replied to Michael Graves's discussion seeking advice
"The old school method of setting up at the nut is to put your finger down between the second and third strings. Then if you can slide a cigarete paper between the string and the first fret the nut is at the perfect height.  Here is my take on…"

ChickenboneJohn replied to Michael Graves's discussion best size bolt to use for but
"I use a bolt as a nut for most of my fretted  guitars. As long as you cut the slot for the bolt centred on the "zero fret" position the intonation should be bang-on right. Once you get the hang of how deep to set the bolt, I find it…"

JL replied to Michael Graves's discussion best size bolt to use for but
"For a slide git, any threaded thingy you have on hand that gets the strings off the neck. For a fretted git, don't do it.  it has a different 'last contact' point than a regular nut and will throw off your fret positions &…"

Richard Dean replied to Michael Graves's discussion seeking advice
"if fretted, strings approx .030 above the first fret, and end up between 2-2.5mm(5/64") somewhere between the 12th and 17th fret, sorry for all the different types of measurements, a string fret scale is cheap, 3-5 bucks on ebay. Some people…"

The different personality's each one has, the different ways you can build one by the way you feel while building it, the oldish antique look I can do with them and of course that old Delta Blues Sound I can get out of one.
