alternatives to machine heads?

So I really like the idea of taking non-musical parts and making a musical instrument, or at the very least, making the part yourself.  Using machine heads is sort of like cheating to me and sort of…Continue

I built a a thing that makes noise that is in the shape of a diddley bow

I hesitate to call my build an actual musical instrument.  It's more like a electric noise maker.  I'm not a guitarist, or a musician of any sort.  But I decided to see what I could come up with…Continue

"Bert, No issues with Marshall's personal prefs; I think everyone is just doing the same thing back, expressing their preferences. And lest we forget, the original Lester Pohlfuss was an inveterate tinkerer. The famed Log was a simple pine…"

"I think what Marshall said has been misread. "is sort of like cheating to me". He hasn't made a generalizing statement. Just described his personal preference. :) Ted: WOW! Those are awesome! And the use of salt is very trick! One…"

"On this one I had used a screw http://www.cigarboxnation.com/photo/tuning-machine-made-out-of-a-screw-glued-down-in-placxe?context=user   On this one two locking nuts and a bolt whith a hole in it where chosen - as seen faintly at the…"

MichaelS Country Boy Guitars replied to Marshall Novak's discussion alternatives to machine heads?
"Marshall, I use guitar tuners because they work, tune easily and stay that way while I try to play.  I have made wing nut and bolt tuners, they worked ok but not as well and the real cost of them if I had to buy the parts is more than a cheap…"

"@Ted - wow, that looks great! A bit like a medieval siege engine (a trebuchet I saw in Warwick,UK?) It's very clean yet authentic. A master build, indeed."

Ted Crocker replied to Marshall Novak's discussion alternatives to machine heads?
"I made one using dowels as a simple tuner.  The screw at the base end pulls it tight to the headstock and it stays in tune.  I sprinkled salt in the recess for friction.   "

"I must admit I'm rather surprised the responses.  In my first experiment with a diddly bow, I just wrapped the string around a bold that was screwed into end of the wood.  Then I ordered some machine heads.  There is no music…"

"Regular tuners are probably the best way to go if you are using guitar strings because of the high tension. I do like using zither tuners very much. If I could just find super cheap wrenches that look like keys used to bleed radiators in your house…"

"I've used the eyebolt approach on a couple of builds.  Works surprisingly well, though a tiny bit touchier to get in tune.  Check out Crow's page--he's got the best method for stringing eyebolt tuners I've seen yet."

William McCauley replied to Marshall Novak's discussion alternatives to machine heads?
"I have tried the eye bolt route and I really don"t like the look. On my last build I was going to use them and after seeing them on the pre-assembled guit, I changed for a set of Gitty tuners. I also thought the eye bolts added a lot of weight…"

"Machine tuners for me. I've done the. eyebolt thing. Costs more. More trouble than it's worth really. I've done a 3 string with wooden pegs. I used the instructables as a reference and went from there. Ridiculously time consuming,…"
