"Hi Haydon, the top of a resonator guitar does not have to resonate as it's the resonator "aluminum cone" or dog bowl in this case that creates the main sound. The top f a full resonator guitar is connected to the back via a ring,…"

Using aluminium

I'm making a dog bowl resonator and am considering using an aluminium sheet/plate as the "soundboard" - with a hole in it to suspend the upside-down bowl. Looking to get back into building instruments after a 7 year gap. Inspired to build a 'travel' instrument for my great-neice and have started on the paddle strum stick. Am making a resonator version, spinning a cone resonator from a can. Have got rid of most of my luthier tools........Most interesting is the experimental aspect!
