Building with Aspen?

Just wondering if anyone has any wisdom on building with Aspen wood. Specifically necks. Saw some at Menards and it looked really stiff and light. Thoughts?Continue

Maybe this has been posted before or it's just common knowledge and I'm a doofus. Regardless...I've been using airsoft pellets for fretboard dots for a while. Minimal hassle, cheap and fairly…Continue

3 or 4 String License Plate Guitar?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Lane Martin Nov 16, 2016. 7 Replies

So far, I've built around a dozen CBGs - all 3-stringers. With my recent ukelele build, I've kinda got the 4-string bug... maybe.Snagged a couple of good license plates over the weekend and planning…Continue

This build was a double-first. My first ukulele and my first build with a real cigar box. I usually build my boxes from scratch. My deepest respect to those of you who build with them exclusively.…Continue

"Great lookin' tricone, Hal. Sounds like a good player. I, too, built a dog bowl git, and while it was a fun build, it also was dull sounding. I ultimately converted it to a "big box" license plate git, much better sound to me. I am…"

Tricone Resonator CBG

A friend of mine recently bought a dogbowl resonator cbg on Etsy. To be honest, it didn't have much "resonator" to it, but was built well and played in tune. A friend of his saw it and wanted a resonator cbg of his own. Long story short, I got the commission.I know lots of you have made dogbowl, paint can lid, etc…See More

"I bought some maple for necks at Menards in KC. The shrink wrap kinda put me off too. Couldn't get a good look down the sides or at the end grain. Bought it anyway. Mine ended up as ukulele necks, so it was easy to compensate. When…"

"Aspen wood is soft but strong. It resists worping if it has been heat treated. (It turns gray when heat treated.) The only way to know if it will make a neck is to build one. It may be something that is a good resonator wood so buy enough to build a…"

Thoughts on a Guitar Show

Posted on April 25, 2017 at 11:30am 5 Comments

I was a vendor at my first guitar show this past weekend. The show had a minor handmade music theme and was headlined by Justin Johnson, who had a booth, did a clinic and presented the final concert of the day. The show directors contacted me to ask if I’d be interested in donating one of my guitars as a giveaway item to be signed - and potentially played - by Justin. Since I live only 70 miles from the venue, I jumped at it. Arranged for the donation, reserved a booth and started flinging…

Scarf With Me

I’ve seen several questions on scarf joints recently. Since a quick search didn’t reveal a recent tutorial, thought I’d contribute.

Disclaimer: I’m not a woodworking or scarf joint expert, guru or genius. Just building instruments in my garage, like many of you. I also know that there is more…
