the neck looks off-center at the heel because the wood actually has a 'live' edge inside the box.
this piece of padauk was almost unusable, which was driving me crazy. when i figured out how to cut it to work for a mandolin, i was pretty stoked.
with the blonde sapwood and the live edge, this is a super cool looking neck!

awesome man im gonna try it that way on my next build, will save me a bunch of time if it works for me

yep, i use this system all the time.  i just get as close to the tail of the instrument as i can, and wedge the piezo nice and tight between the soundboard and neck before tuning up.  they sound great, but the rods are meant to have some pressure applied to them... if they don't have enough pressure, you lose sound and it can get disappointing

shane speal plays this mandolin frequently, and recently said of it

"It's been plugged into small PA's and massive pro rigs. Never lets me down. A perfect instrument that will remain in my arsenal"

hey is that a piezo rod just sitting there under the box lid? (sandwiched between the neck and lid perhaps?) my experimentation with the rods showed they didnt sound that great without direc t string pressure but i never tried it how you have yours. how does it sound?

say you cut a tree up into planks.  a 'live edge' is any edge that you didn't cut, so it has bark on it. some really beautiful conference tables and such utilize them for the natural beauty.

this one didn't have bark left on it, and threw off the maths.  but it worked out in the end!

Forgive my ignorance. Could you explain what a 'live' edge is?
