I stole this idea from bodhrans (Irish frame drums) that I've seen. Skin heads are quite sensitive to temp and humidity variations and this is one way to compensate. My mother used to play piano in a Latin group and she said the conga player would hold a candle inside the drum till the head tightened back up.
