Hey all. I've read up a bit on the design of sound wells for reso
guitars... Most of them say to use plywood. Does the material of the sound well matter? I
saw a number of plasticy/styrofoamy rings at the craft store, and
wondered if they would work, with the addition of some holes through the sides...

Thanks for the heads-up, Jim. Certainly a helpful video! I'll post the results of my experimentation when I get to it in the build cue. Before my reso build: a humbucker!

Actually I think quality plywood makes sense, it's stable and available so I use it... I posted a video from Pat Cook on my page that he did showing how he makes his reso's you might check it out.

Hey Scott my two cents are. Stick with solid material. I have been told that you want a solid vibration free platform for your cone to rest on. I will be interested to see what you come up with.
Hey Jim, two cents are always welcomed and appreciated. Most of what I've seen show soundwells made of thick plywood... Any suggestions as to other materials that would resist vibration?

You want something that's going to reflect the sound. I think the Styrofoam might absorb it too much. If you're looking around craft stores, you should see if you can find wooden needlepoint hoops. If you glue one on top of the other, they make a really solid 1" deep well.
Hah! I probably would have never thought of that. Brilliant suggestion, Ben!
