  • Sam: Your friend Greg Wynn suggested getting together with you. I am in Moline and have built many instruments. Would love to see your shop and activities and share build-stories. email: jmjunk@yandex.com. Take care

  • Thanks for getting back to me Sam. I saw your ukuleles at Skeleton Key some time ago and then last week at Festival of Trees which got me to thinking again about getting one I have a "traditional" Concert ukulele and a Banjouke or Banjolele  which ever you prefer which is sort of the lazy man's way of playing the banjo. I really love the way it sounds. I also have a Soprano ukulele and I had the G string lowered an octave to get that richer sound but it goes out of tune so much I never play it which is probably the problem; I need to play it but it is so frustrating to tune it after every song. I feel you lose some richness of tone with a Cigar  Box instrument but I like what I feel is that old-timey sound. Have you ever built an amplified Cigar Box ukulele with a volume control? I sing so if I'm going to be plugging the ukulele and a microphone into the same amp I need to control the volume of the ukulele. I have been retired for about 2 and a half years but as I tell people "Yes, I used to be somebody". I was at WQAD from '87-'89, WQPT-TV from '89-2009 and while working there fulltime I also worked part time doing news in the morning on WOC Radio from 1990-2000. I was laid off from WQPT  (as was practically everyone else later) due to budget cuts in Feb of 2009 but moved into the Recruitment Department at Black Hawk College where they were located (they are now at WIU) for my final 5 years, retiring when the State Legislature threatened to dip into our pensions to help pay the bills. ANYWAY, I'll take a look at your ukuleles at the galleries in the Quad Cities. Thanks, Susan
