  • The pictures look great, Alan! You said you thought you had taken too much wood from the back of the neck -- I have taken to adding a fingerboard next time to counteract that problem.
  • Yep, its been pretty wet lately! Keeps me indoors building though so I dont mind so much :o)
Let me know how you get on - like I said, the only real problem with a wide neck is that it can be uncomfortable reaching over to the strings - just taking the edge off the bottom side helps no end!
    Cheers

  • Hi Alan, great to see you have started your build! Dont be shy about asking questions - we all learn from each other :o) Ok, neck width... yes, Id agree that does seem quite wide for a 3 string. Normally I allow 5mm from the edge of the neck to the inner and outer most strings, then 10mm or 12mm between strings (I did try a 3 string with 15mm between, and it was just a bit too much for me). With a 12mm gap therefore, you end up at 34mm full width - nearer 1 3/8". HOWEVER... the last two 3 stringers I built had 45mm necks, which is pretty much dead on 1 7/8" as you have. I got around it by shaping both the back and the front of the neck, just to take the sharp edge off so you could reach the strings. In the end the neck reminded me a little of an axe handle in shape!! It worked though, and to my mind kept the neck in better proportion to the guitar. At the end of the day, the most important thing is, 'Is it comfortable to play?'
    Hope this helps
Like I said, any Qs, drop me a line.... and dont forget to take some pics mid-build!
    All the best
    Ben
  • I can always build you one to suit mate - though by the sounds of it you'll have built your own pretty soon! I have a couple of orders for 3 strings so Il be doing more of them for sure.
Ah yes, ebay... the other addiction!! They seem to go hand in hand, but boy is it worth doing those regular searches :o)
Looking forward to seeing your first creation mate - if you need any help with anything give me a holler
