Hey all,

Thinking of having an acoustic built, but before I dive into that, I was wondering if there was a consensus as to the best sounding boxes for an acoustic CBG? Cardboard or wood? Which box have you heard that sounded great. Yes, I am aware that all CBG's sound slightly different, but I also know I've never heard an electric Punch box sound that I didn't like. So what about acoustic boxes? Any recommendations?

Wine presentation box? I love mine but, then again, I did put a dog bowl resonator in it. Lots of them available on eBay too and less than a tenner. Cigar boxes I can't speak for much but I do really like the sound of my Romeo Y Julietta box. It's an electric build but has a really nice acoustic tone and volume too, despite there being no soundholes. Wood versus cardboard? I'd say wood but I also got a really surprisingly good sound from a cardboard poker set box one build. Amazing what can be coaxed out of lots of different sound chambers sometimes.

Best of fortunes finding the sound you're looking for.

Bear.

I just want a really loud sounding acoustic that I can take virtually anywhere without carting my Cube with me.

Why not have them build the amp and speaker directly in the box, like my Busker?;

Interesting idea, and I've seen those, but I think I want a CBG strictly for acoustic sound. One that broadcasts acoustically without any amplification.

If you are wanting loud, without amping, you need to go big, the larger volume of air you push, the louder it will get usually, as for sound quality, i'd say stay with solid wooden boxes, i've found that mostly, the paper covered boxes are a bit duller, i have got one extra large Macanudo mdf box which is very loud, the top was 1/2" thick, but i routed it down to about a 1/4" on the inside, it approaches small accoustic guitar volumes, but favours the bass side of the tone

Well, interestingly enough, my electric CBG is made from a big ol' red BrickHouse box, and it's just not that loud acoustically, and it has 2 big sound holes as well. I'm thinking the strings have alot to do with it as well, right?

A lot of people including me, think the Padron wooden boxes, normally are the goods, i also like the Cohiba's

Interesting....all wooden, huh? The guy that built my electric said he builds his acoustics mainly out of cardboard boxes (for $75), but will build them out of wood on request.

Also, my previous electric builder doesn't put the fret markers on the front of the neck. He did put them on the top though, but for some reason he doesn't like putting them on the front (even though I asked him before he built it). As a beginner, I know now that having the fret markers on the front is a big help for me, and I'm sorry I'm missing them on my first CBG. My builder also doesn't put a zero fret on his builds, which Jim Morris showed me lastnight, which makes lots of sense.

So, I'm thinking I might need to find another builder for my acoustic as well.

The dots are easy enough to add, just get some thick knitting needles of whatever colour you choose, and a drill bit the same diameter, drill a small hole, insert needle, cut flush, then next one, a little sanding if it needs it and all good, or you could just use small screws as dots, even easier. Re the boxes, i'm just going on my experiences, i've found the wooden boxes, especially the wooden tops , just sound better As to the zero fret, it is a lot easier to set up, but if your standard nut is done well, there's no need to change it, and if your builder doesn't do zero fret on request,, he either doesn't understand the concept, or for no good reason is a bit fearfull of it

Thanks Darryl, but honestly I'm not set up to do any shop work at all where I currently reside. The neck on my CBG is flawlessly executed, stained and glossed. I have zero desire to mess with it at all, LOL. Knowing me, I'd screw it all up.

Fair enough

Most of us like wood. The Padron boxes are great, as are the Las Cabrillas boxes Dan Sleep uses.
