Hi Guys.

I gave a CBG to my grandaughter, and she is taking it to Australia. She is concerned that customs might seize it because of the cigar box it is made of.  She will declare it when she arrives, but doesn't want to lose it because of some bureaucrat that think there might be some cigar residue after 5 years. Can anyone give me some guidance?

whaa? are australians superstitious about cigar residue?

I've sent several cigarbox guitars to Australia (from the UK) with no problems.

However, it's worth noting that Australia customs and quarantine are VERY strict on even the remote possibility of the accidental importation of insects, mould, spores etc. which might pose biological threats to their own flora, fauna, ecology and agriculture.

It might be worth checking beforehand, as their concerns will probably be with the possibility that the wood itself could harbor insect pests, or that remnants of loose tobacco leaf could be infected with mould etc that are alien to the Oz environment. As I say, not likely to be a problem, but check to see if you need to declare it, then at least she won't get hit with an unnecessary fine or the risk of having it confiscated...or taken away to be fumigated, and charged for the cost. Assume that if customs are in doubt, they'll err on the side of caution.

I'm more concerned with this notion of anyone taking ANYTHING to Australia, as there is a reason it is

called OZ...  it is a wholly imaginary country.  it does not exist!  Oh yes,  I am well aware that people

claim to have been there, and some even claim to LIVE there... even some jokesters on this very sight

would have you believe that they are "Aussies"...  but it is all lies!  The sad reality is that anyone in

"Australia(!?!?!?)"  would immediately plunge into the vast abyss of space,  and anyone who tried to

travel there would either sail right off the face of the earth,  or fly straight into the black nothingness of

   outer space!!!

Wow! Great answers! Do you think her Australian passport is a cover for aliens?? She looks like my granddaughter, but maybe not? Maybe she was abducted, and returned posing as an Australian? Maybe they think the CBG is really a jambuck stowed in her tucker bag? She just wanted a CBG so she could play waltzes...

I started out thinking.............HHHhhhmmm..... these guys have WAAAY  too much time on their hands.

But then I remembered that I seemed to have the time to SOAK UP  EVERY WORD :)

Nice work on the lap steel !

They might indeed seize it. I would wait and post it to her

Posting things makes no odds..the postal service are just as rigorous screening stuff. As I say, I've had no problems in the past, just make sure you check it out with Australian customs beforehand to avoid any potential problems.

My thoughts exactly. I don't think she will have any trouble.

no, they are not.  Ive flown in to australia (where i live) many times and the customs ppl at the airports can be much more hardcore than the folks at the post office.

anyway good luck with it.  it might be ok, and it might not.  asome of the customs guys at the airport can be very zealous, particularly with untreated vegetable matter.   if its laquered it shouldnt matter..

also, ive had two tin guitars damaged by flight crews in the past on qantas flights too after they wouldnt let me take em on board

i should add it depends a lot where youre coming in from too, particularly flying in from sth east asia they can go thru your stuff pretty hard core, but from usa and europe they might be a little less so

Perhaps if you stuff the cbg with mouldy old cabbage leaves, wriggling with maggots and other pests, or maybe with hard core drugs, they will overlook the fact its a cigar box....

Classic misdirection.

Yuup! We couldn't get a decent answer from customs, the airline, or TSA. I told her to say that if they didn't give it to her. they would incur the wrath of the "NATION".
