*Very* decent quality, 5/16" thick solid cedar top.  Sounds nice on my box tester, good volume, wonder if dishing out the back 1/16" or 1/8" would make it louder?

Chuck,

Gorgeous box!

If you have the capability to do a "TV rout" (you know, like an old style TV screen with rounded corners), dishing it out on the backside to 1/8"final  thickness should improve the vibe characteristics of that top as a soundboard wonderfully. Is this gonna be an acoustic, or an acoustic-electric build? On your builds, do you do neck-throughs or bolt-ons? If neck-throughs, do you screw the top to the neck at the bridge and neck-set ends? Only reason I ask is that would determine how close you get to the edge with your router bit.

Are you comfortable removing that much material for a 1/8" final thickness? I don't dare to suggest you go to a 1/16" final thickness, since you might feel like you'd have to brace it - and 1/32" final thickness, I think you'd definitely need bracing. Plus the discomfort of cutting that deep into such a fine chunk of wood - one slip, and "Oh, SH****T!"

Louder (more volume) will also come from sound hole design and placement. What are your thoughts on that for this build?

Can't wait to see what you do with it. Would it, p'r'aps, we wonders, my precious, be for sale? ;-)

What is this "Box tester" you are talking about?

OMG wonderful idea.

That is amazingly clever!
Gooseneck scraper, no jigs, no setup.  Check depth with a straightedge and a slim taper of wood, like half of a clothes pin.  3/16" min. top thickness. This'll be bolt-on, lets me use a shorter neck blank.  Electric-acoustic, using prewired Strat harness.  Stylized F-holes, shame to hide that nice solid cedar under grommets.

Chuck,

Thanks for the detail. 3/16" is how thick my plywood soundboard tops are, and they resonate pretty well. Sounds like it's gonna be a lovely build.

Try this at home...

Rodney,

Nii-iice!!!! Struts and routing out all in one. That's the idea...
Would look kinda cool installed inside out.
Yeah, kinda Steampunkish.
What are the effects of simply dropping the tuning a step, third, fifth, octave, etc?
