I have an Epiphone Dot Hollowbody that I am trying to convert to a slide gutar.

Am trying to swap in some Hotter humbucker pickups (Entwistles) .

Anyway the stock Humbuckers have 3 wires each. The guitar has a single volume and single tone and 3 way switch.  My new replacements have 5 wires each and the guy that was going to solder them in is

stumped.  Any way this can work?  I bought the pickups on ebay and have no schematic.

Any help is much appreciated.  John

Seymour Duncan schematics are easy to follow.  This seems to be the one you are after based on the info given.

Be aware that different pickup makers sometimes use different wires as shown here

For other wiring diagrams the link is here http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/

Hope this helps.

Regards,

David

Thank You.  That looks like the same colors I have,   but mine are Entwistles from UK/via Hong Kong.   Are the colors uniform on various humbuckers if you know?  Have been  googling and learned that the 2 unused wires are for an optional split humbucker switch.    Thanks for this info--I am not a builder (or much of a player for that matter) :)  .JOhn

Sorry David I read the diagrams again.  Looks like its all over the place colorwise.  A bit of a Crapshoot.  have emails to Entwistle but it is the weekend.  I had a schematic on my first set and the builder didn't need it.  Thanks  js

What is going on is that the pickup is set up for coil tapping. That means it can either act as a humbucker or as a single coil. You should be able to at least somewhat figure it out using a ohm meter.

The diagram says "bare" is always a ground wire, so you can leave that one out. Then grab two other wires and hook it up to the meter. If you get a reading, then you know that those two are the start and finish wires for one of the coils. If not, then you have grabbed wires from two different coils.

The only part I'm not sure about is how to figure out which is the start wire and which is the finish wire. This could make a difference in the sound, since you need one coil to be reverse wound from the other for it to "buck hum". If you reverse the leads, that, in effect, reverses the windings. I would just go my ear at this point - temporarily hook it up with some alligator clip test leads and see which way sounds full and beefy like a humbucker.

Hi John,

I found this link where somebody else had a similar problem with the wiring for Entwistle humbuckers

http://acapella.harmony-central.com/showthread.php?2634920-Pickup-w.......

and this site explains how to work out the wiring using a simple multimeter

David

Thanks  for all the replies.  I got an email back from the seller that confirms that it is just like the first Seymore Duncan diagram above.

Black is hot.  The Red and White are tied off.  Thanks again .  John

Hi.

I have an Entwistle X3 (neck position) rail humbucker that I haven't used yet, but have tested. The wiring diagram shows red and white soldered together, black to ground and green to signal.

I hope this is of some help.

John

Thanks John, I have a schematic forwarded from Entwistle.  And 2 emails.  They are saying black is hot just like the SD above.  Go figure.  My schematic is from the 58 Humbucker and not the Darkstar that I have.  I do have some Entwistle HDNs in my mini Les Paul. So I may have to pull those and look.  My HDNs give off a blistering tone by the way.  john

All this stuff puzzles me all the time so this is no change. Is yours an X3 or some other model? Maybe that is the difference. I understand that there is a little known concept called standardisation. Apparently it is completely foreign to pickup makers (and I am not meaning the ones who use this site, of course).

My new ones are the Darkstars.  The schematic I got was from the 58 Humbucker, and I just assumed they were the same.  But now???????   At least I now have a couple of contacts to follow with.  FYI the email on the site apparently goes directly to Alan Entwistle who is the guru and he seems like a great, responsive guy.  John

ps to john, I emailed for clarification from the Entwistle contact I was given. js

Standardisation: Apparently it is completely foreign to pickup makers.

Lol
