I use the same hot glue gun I use to glue in loose fitting brass sound hole covers from the inside of the lid. Works well for labels, as long as you don't squeeze out too big a blob.
I use regular elmers white glue for the paper labels. Just a small amount under the edge and you can wipe off the excess the squeezes out.
I also like using rubber cement for larger areas- just brush on a thin layer and let dry(yes let dry first it's contact cement!) then attach. Any excess will rub right off the box.
I use Aquadhere wookglue - dries clear and you can also coat the top of the label to protect it from dirt and keep the edges from lifting.

I'm usually within reaching distance of my bottle of titebond, so I use it. Paper ain't nuttin' but thin wood anyway!

I just use a little super glue and just hold the edges down. Works great, especially since I always shoot lacquer on my boxes when I build to help keep everything nice a clean, not to mention shiny.

I think what we have learned here is that any glue you have will probably hold down the lifting paper edges.  As usual the old saying goes, there are no rules. lol
I like your logic :)
