I use a hole punch and some veneer scraps. I also use the inside spike of pop rivets(after using those for string openings) for nice side dot markers.

I was also paging through an old grizzly catalogue with all these nice photos of rare woods -I bet you could cut some holes out of those too. While your add it make some fake veneer for your headstock!

Just apply with modge podge.

I've also heard people using:

guitar picks

credit cards (only good use for these!)

anyone try old cds yet?

Anything else we can use???

I use plastic combs for nuts and bridges.

The teeth from the comb make excellent side dot markers.

BIll- do you drill and drive like placing a wooden peg?
I used brass screws.  Originally they were functional and held the fretboard on as well...but the neck started to warp so glued the fretboard (which put an instant stop to the warping) and the screws are just fret markers now.

That's a great idea. I was looking at plastic hangers and wood/metal pant hangers for similar parts.

I tried using a hole puncher on a cd. I didn't work. The foil part separates from the plastic. I think using guitar picks works best. They're cheap and come in countless colors and patterns.
have you tried using a paper punch on old credit cards ,you can get some nice colours.
Shawn has used sliced up (cross sections) plastic chop sticks and sliced up lead solder for dots.

I  use toothpicks and wooden meat skewers for side dot markers.

Someone also suggested  useing a pencil sharpener to sharpen a contrasting piece of wood then drill a hole in the side of the finger board and force the pointy bit in then cut it off.

i have used those little paper "donut" shaped things that you use for stregnthening paper in a file.  I stick them on and paint into the hole - when the paint is dry peel 'em off

Most often I just use a wood burner and don't worry too much about the shape or pattern. Most recently I used a flat, chisel tip and just made a # sign at each location, then a tiny round tip to mark the top side of the neck.

I use plastic chop sticks. Stick one in a drill and use sand paper to round them out and cut 1/16 slices using an exacto saw. Drill a hole and super glue them in and finally sand them flush to the fret board. Best part I use the left overs as saddles or nuts you can get a packet of them for cheap
P.S. If you leave them in old coffee for a few days they get an old bone look.
just wanted to share this little tip ! (no pun intended !! ) home depot has escutcheon pins made of brass size #18X3/4 " that are awesome for side markers. you get around 50 of them for a buck. just drill ur side marker holes nip the pins down to 1/4 inch put a spot of super glue in the hole and stick them in. I countersink the heads with a drill bit the same size and recess them or u can just let them stay raised so u can feel them in the dark. heres how it looks
