So, I am building my new neck.  Its going okay.  I drilled some holes for some inlays for the fret markers. I was going to use shirt buttons.  I drilled the holes, I added some plastic x, which so far is really cool stuff. Then I let it dry. I proceeded to dig out the needed space of the puddy to put in my buttons and then super glue them in the holes.  Needless to say, it was a disaster.  So I dug out the buttons again and now I have natural wood filler in holes in a oak neck, at this time drying.  So I was wondering, if once everything is dry, could I just maybe mix some clear glue with some paint and add to the said holes. As in, filling the holes with something I can see with kinda dying the glue.  I have some of that clear glue that is good for making kids slime. I thought about just leaving the holes a natural color, but I want them a bit darker. I wish now I would have just gotten some darker wood filler.  Has anyone else tried to fill in inlays with some sort of colored glue or paint?

Hi, two ways I do it:
1- using 5min epoxy I mix with wood dust of choice to a paste and apply to the hole, slightly above, and when dry slice flush with the surface with a sharp chisel. Saves having sanding marks.

2- Instead of wood dust I would use Tempera colored powder. Same process.

Oh, and use the HTML tab,NOT VISUAL MODE

Good luck, Taff

I wouldn’t use that clear glue. it’s really for paper crafts, so it’s not as permanent on wood or wood joints. Clear epoxy is the fastest & most permanent solution though?

I’m sure I probably told you, but since the site’s so old, we have a few problems that have simple fix, if you follow this you can’t go wrong, you also do the same when adding pics to comments/replies?

Hey Brian Q, I was wondering if this site is trying to do too much with too little tech. I use another Ning guitar forum that runs perfectly. However it has a fraction of the content.

Maybe that's why folks are using the forum part less. How hard can it be to remove the visual mode words with "out of order". Don't try to fix the problem, just don't offer people the opportunity to use it.

If they can change adds on here why not words in other areas?

Just askining...
Taff

Actually they never intended for this to run as long as it has, it’s really here for posterity, but people like us keep posting? Basically everyone followed to the CBN Facebook platform back in 09’ except for us?

Thanks Brian Q, checked out the Facebook version, once is enough. Not much there in the way of conversation or education that I could find. And the the first paragraph or two here's a link back here, "the mother ship". Their words not mine.

This is the better forum for involving people I think, just needs freshening up. I believe in the saying, if something's worth doing, it's worth doing well. Anyway it is what it is, and I enjoy the input from others.
Taff.

IMO, Facebook is not a good venue for things that should be on a forum.  A forum can handle categories, subjects by thread, etc.  Valuable information can be recovered via search.  FB is no replacement for a good forum.

I have to believe that there are people here that can help update this old platform.  At the very least, tweak it a bit to make it more user friendly.  There is way too much valuable info for it to go to waste or be lost.

Actually, that’s the problem, if they update, then we’ll loose most of the info here in the process? I don’t think it’s that much of a problem, you just have to remember to click one extra button before you post? IMO this is the easiest forum to navigate on the internet, all the sub-categories are in pull down tabs at the top of the page, can’t get easier than that! Anyone express their concerns with Gitty yet?

I remember a brief correspondence with CB on the repairing of this site.  He was concerned and had his tech people on the case, they fixed some things but not the major ones such as posting.  I used to post fine until something broke around 2 years ago.  Anyway, they can't find it and I don't blame them, it's a can of worms.

Perhaps archiving this site, as is, for future reference and create a fresh new forum.  Other forums I visit, have done this, saving old content into a subforum and starting anew.  Only thing, the site will have to be shut down for a couple weeks for the maintenance...

Not going off topic, some super glue dry clear and some dry a white residue.  I always use Loctite brand for it stays clear.

I also experimented with acrylic paint to fill in as inlays. The cheap dollar store brand too. It turns into a hard plastic in a ventilated area. It shrinks a little bit, but in your case, shirt button sized holes, a dab in each hole with your favorite color of acrylic paint, let it dry overnight and then sand over the excess.

Hi, here is a cheap marker solution, but it takes the same effort as installing pearl dots. if not more. But we don't mind it not being too easy...do we?

I have a stash of old knitting needles, here I have used red ones.

I buy them when I see them in different colours, and I have a simple jig to slice them up into dots. You could also use old chopsticks brass rods or tubes, anything that can be sliced up.

Cheers taff

Very Cool!!
