This could be git related or not. So, what's on your workbench at the moment?
I have 4 scarf joint necks in different stages of work.
A 25" scale pine 5 string neck for a Banjo-Res, A 25" scale Red Oak neck for my 6 string Strat-Res build, A 24 & 1/2" scale Red Oak neck for my 6 string Double Cut Tele build and a 27" scale 6 string Baritone Conversion neck for a Modern Strat body I have.

Yeah I was surprised too at Rocklers prices - not bad at all!
Same here Paul. I do like Stewmac and I buy when it's overstock season or big sales and closeouts. But most things are overpriced. I buy when it's my last resort. I guess they provide more for high end manufactured guitars and for luthiers that repair them. One thing about Rockler, you get all 4 sides shaved to size which makes it great to get perfect cuts and angles on the table saw. The maple board from Stew Mac was a raw cut out the barn. I had to sand and plane it to size, suppose to be 1x4, but more like 1.25x4.15 on one end and 1.14x4 on the other.
Was watching some videos on Purpleheart wood and amazed of its strength and workability. Looks like I'm gonna have to invest in some titanium blades
lol
Hi, it’s interesting to hear that you guys think that Stewmac prices are a bit rich, imagine buying from Australia when one has conversation rates and international freight to consider. I normally buy when the dollar looks good.
I remember contacting them back in the early 1970s when I was looking for suppliers.
But I found that by the time they were offering a range of tools, gadgets, and jigs I had made quite a few of them myself already. What I had made, many served me for 10 years or more before I purchased the same tool from Stewmac, others are still in service. At last count, going through their catalog, I had made fifty items that do the same task as was available through their store. These ranged from a simple pot knob puller to the $1000.00 fretting workstation jig.
I always buy tonewood from the processor or specialized tonewood outlet. For acoustics anyway.
But I must say their service and support are great. Just too far away.
Speaking of timber, building a whole solid body guitar out of an exotic species can make the guitar very heavy, and expensive. If I want a nice-looking guitar, I put a cap of a choice timber on the face of another timber. You can buy them as caps about ¼” – 3/8”. In the two examples shown here, I sliced them myself.
The humbucker model is one piece of book-matched Black Wattle on New Guinee Rosewood, which gives a nice matched grain effect. The single-coil guitar has four pieces of Burdiken Plum on Alder, both caps are heavy Queensland timbers. You can see how you can make your timber/$ go further and your guitar lighter.
Cheers Taff
Those look great Taffy. I knew Australians had a hard time and high prices when buying overseas.
I do buy several items from Stewmac. I buy my fret wire, trussrods and nuts from them on a regular basis. Their timber is usually high, but it's high quality in my experiences buying it and they do sale thin pieces to make caps.
Stewmac shipping can be pricey, but it's usually fast and they are always willing to answer questions or give advice. Their news letters often come with luthier related videos and info.
But if you look at the distance from Athens, Ohio to Australia on a globe, then you know why it costs so much!! Quite a distance? Paul, did you know that the fretwire Gitty carries is from stewmac & only $3.99 shipping, so it’s actually cheaper than getting it from the actual manufacturer/supplier? Free shipping on orders over $50 in the lower 48? I thought it sounded peculiar too, but I’ve been buying mine from Gitty ever since I found this out?
I bought some from Gitty once a long time ago(Jescar I think)and it was real hard to bend/manipulate, so I kept buying from Stewmac. They may be selling the same stuff now or was then and I didn't know. I'll check that out soon, so thanks for the info Brian.
Hi, I notice that the Gitty wire is only half the length or less than what I get from Stewmac.
Taff
Hi Taffy, the last wire I got from Stewmac was already bent to radius of choice and already cut to length(2&1/2").
Hi Paul, pre-cut I got ya. I get mine in straight lengths in a tube. I'm thinking less waste if a three-string, mandolin, or banjo. and easier to clean off the machining lube in one go.
It was those straight lengths I was referring to.
Taff
Awhile back they only sent fret wire out in 2ft. length. I remember ordering 3 pieces from them and it arrived in a box for shipping guitar necks and one piece was sticking out the end corner when I got it. LOL
The pre-radiused Jescar 6ft./$9.79 at C.B. Gitty comes in 8” lengths, the plain fretwire 6ft./$9.99 comes in 12” lengths? Fretwire comes in a thick heat-sealed package, I think they made the lengths shorter in order to cut the package size & shipping cost down? I think those odd sized packages have higher shipping rates?
