Mexican folk bass (tololoche)

Mexican folk bass (tololoche)

I found this in a small local museum in El Rosario, Baja California, Mexico. It's identified as a tololoche, which is a plucked folk instrument pitched between a double bass and a cello. In its traditional form, it has a cello-like body with a fretted neck, tuned in fourths.

This one was made in 1930. Clearly, it does not have a cello-like body. The sheet metal body is wrapped around a plywood soundboard. The headstock, neck, and bridge are pretty coarsely carved.

I didn't ask to try it out, so I can't report on the sound quality, but it must have done the job to have lasted this long.
