Hi Brian; water, took 3 applications for good saturation, probably depends on wood type. How many coats do you use with alcohol?

The guitars I’ve dyed were Gibson Les Paul’s & a few Paul Reed Smith (maple) maybe I need to do some testing on softer woods?

Well, it depends on how deep the customer wants it, generally 3-5 applications. 2-3 on the darker colors, but it depends on the level saturation? There was a learning curve, since colors don’t saturate equally? I’ve used the tealish blue, yellow & nice deep purple they have. I always do a test run before I go all in, I kinda went too dark on my 1st attempt at it :)
