"Reso-Plate" 3-string License Plate Resonator Guitar Kit

I posted in comments then realized I should've posted here.

I built the reso-plate kit from CBGitty. 

Not sure what the wood is and I'm looking for finishing tips.

As a novice woodworker, finishing is the one area I know little about, but I'm learning. I recently made a table out of cherry. Finished with neutral danish oil and wipe on poly. The natural cherry color popped out beautifully. I wish all finishing were that easy. Unfortunately that won't work on this project.  

Any help is appreciated and of course the simpler the better.
