I know I'm not crazy.....I've built about ten CBG's now....all sound different but relatively good....so for the first time I coat two of them with a minwax stain sealer combination.....and 24 hours later I can't believe how dead they both sound,  it's like day and night,  yesterday they sounded fine....I believe the volume was cut in half ....anybody else ever experience this???

I have not bothered to seal any of mine, but I did have a sound change just by adding a large round piezo disc inside the lid once. I took it out and the good sound came back. Thanks for the heads up, I'm not going to bother with sealer now.
Hmmmm, did you coat the backside? I would say that is more the cause OR... Try this, move the guitar away from your body. See if that makes any difference.

I have rarely had any issues with deadening of volume or tone when I completely cover the box with finish. I even did a while PUNCH box with shellac in the French Polish method. Sounded fine to me.

Sometimes having the guitar back up against your body will cause the sound to deaden.

Thanks for your input Wes, I did coat it entirely inside and out, it definitely isn't about my body...good advice though....one fella said it probably needs more drying time...that's my hope!

Yeah, I was really going for an aged look that I'll try to achieve in other ways...may never seal again, and definitely not the inside!! Thanks for your comments Michael!

John, he say:

Inside and out eh? meaning inside the box as well as outside the box? Hmmmm. That's pretty unorthodox per se. Dunno many who finish the inside of the box. Stain sealer (or any other finish) should be thin enough to maintain the natural acoustics [read: what acoustics a cigar box has]. There has to be another solution to this mystery. When you find it, tell us what it was.

urathane stays rubbery when it dries and could deaden sound. I coat inside and out of all my boxes but use spray laquer it dries rock hard and i think makes the box louder. Also like the fact it dries in like 5 min. Get the good stuff I like deft.
