Greetings all,

I'm working on another build with dual springs along the thru body neck inside the box for reverb effect.  My last build didn't seem to generate that much effect from the springs, so I thought I would turn to the collective think tank for some thoughts.

What size spring works best?

What tension? (tight or loose?)

Spring material make a difference?

Thanks in advance for all the wisdom.  You all are awesome!!!

whoops.. wrong section.. don't know if an admin can move this for me. my bad...

If you’ve ever seen the inside of a reverb tank, they’re loose n flabby?  So you wouldn’t get much vibration if they’re tight. Good luck

Hi Mikey, this is one I can't advise on from personal experience so I'll also wait for those that know to respond.

But as an educated guess I would think that spring size, stiffness  and tension is only part of the equation, the other part is what is exciting the spring inside the box and how efficient is it at doing it.

I notice that the springs are often attached to the sides of the box, an area of minimal vibration. This leads me to think that it is air movement in the box that activates the springs.

Damn, now you've mentioned it Ive got to experiment. You could experiment yourself with an adjustable spring tensioner, that's my first move. I look foreword to other builders comments who have used this idea, I know it's been covered before.

Did you mount it to the neck? Try to mount it as close to the bridge area on side of neck, where it touches the lid. The spot that picks up the most vibration. FYI too stiff of a spring will dampen vibrations. Hope this helps?

All these tips BrianQ gives are essential to getting a cool sounding natural spring reverb. You also want to have two different size springs, both just tight enough so they vibrate easily if you brush them with a finger tip, but not so loose they rattle. I screw mine into the upper part of the neck on opposite sides so they are as close to the bridge/strumming area as I can get them. The size of your box and how much sound vibration it generates will also be a big part of what type of reverb you get.

Use the spring from  those dollar store kids  echo microphones ,  you can get almost the same string in  hardware stores   called a "utility  spring ".

SIze is already  good for tension.

Mount  near the bridge ,  and to the  front of box . or simply across the  end to end .  near a sound hole.

keep it away from  rattling on the sides of box .

use small eye loops to mount .

If you have a mag pickup , and  wish to enhance the effect .  string the spring closer to the edge of the pickup , or  under it at   a distance it will slightly read  the  spring . not to close or you'll get  and overkill , undesirable effect .. best to test spot this first .

 good luck .

Those toy reverb mics are aweome.. ;>)

That's awesome Buggy.

I have used extension springs from Home Depot with pretty good results.

They are sold in 4 packs: 6 1/2 and 4 1/2 inches.  I string the springs just beneath the sound board the entire length of the sound board.  The tension is moderate: not too tight, not too loose.

(Make sure the spring does not contact the sides or neck of the guitar. )

I use a screw eyelet on each side - two per spring.

Hope this helps...

helps muchly, thank you!
