This could be git related or not. So, what's on your workbench at the moment?
I have 4 scarf joint necks in different stages of work.
A 25" scale pine 5 string neck for a Banjo-Res, A 25" scale Red Oak neck for my 6 string Strat-Res build, A 24 & 1/2" scale Red Oak neck for my 6 string Double Cut Tele build and a 27" scale 6 string Baritone Conversion neck for a Modern Strat body I have.

nice one Lonman
Lonman please let us know how these turn out. My first build used an Undercrown box, they look great and are quite stout. Mine sounds good but is so so for volume. Also the details and wood really popped with a coat of spray varnish.
yea, will do. I have not yet decided if I will use teak oil (this is what I use as a finish) or stain it with the same stain as I did the neck. Thoughts on that? I know what you mean about the popping out of the color of the wood. I get that reaction everytime I apply the teak oil. Sometimes I stain the fretboard, but it looks so good just with the teak oil on it. As for the sound of the undercrown box, I plan on using 2 springs (I love those damn things for the acoustics) and agree, the box is heafty. Thick sides. This is the first box I have used with such thick sides. I wanted to finally try out my scoll saw and put f-holes, but with the pick up and the size of the box, I did not think I had room for f-holes, so went with round holes. I hope to video when these are all done.
If I knew how to search on this site I could point you to a picture of two of these boxes, one as is and one with spray finish I posted in the past. Try searching spray varnish if you want to look for it. I would suggest to keep the oil coats light on the box so it didn't soak in to far.
Oils work great on necks and other parts of the git, just remember to apply in thin coats, allow enough time for each coat to dry and polish for a shiny finish except for the backside of the neck. Rub the backside of the neck with some steel wool for a slippery surface that doesn't grab the hand when playing.
I got the strings put on my BO Diddly guitar and that lead to 2 problems.
1. Since this is a through neck and the neck angle can't be adjusted, the bridge is going to need lowering another 1/8" since the bridge cavity wasn't deep enough. The strings are sitting on the first fret like a zero fret right now and the string height at the last fret is close to a 1/2". The nut needs to come up about a 1/8" or more, but that bridge is definitely going to have to be lowered.
2. The string spacing is something I forgot to check on these C.B.Gitty Toaster Bucker pickups. On a 3 or 4 string CBG, this wouldn't be an issue, but on a 6 string it's a problem. The center to center measurement from outer pole to outer pole is 46.5mm on both neck and bridge pickups. 50mm is considered short for a bridge pickup, but can be made to work. 46.5mm is way too short on a bridge pickup. I can use a file to make grooves in the bridge to get the strings over the poles or at least close, get a bridge that is more closely spaced for this pickup(Gretsch Style) or tear into the bridge pickup and replace the screw poles with blade poles for wider spacing.
Fun fun fun for me. I think altering the pickup's poles will be the last option. Altering the bridge spacing may look a little wonky. Getting another bridge will cost more and prolong this project.
Unless the pickups are really week i wouldn't worry about the poles. It's the over all magnetic field that catches the string vibrations. I would try to fix the string hight before worrying about the pickups.
You may be able to strengthen the magnetic field of the pickups. Check out this vid,
The pole problem is on the 3 high strings. The G and B strings are just off the side of the poles and that isn't much of a problem. The high E string is 2.5mm off the side of the pole. Being on the end of the pickup and the pickup's magnetic field, my thinking is that string will be weak sounding. I can get it close by putting a "keeper groove" on top of the ridge and get it closer for a stronger string signal, but that may look bad. Since I have to remove the bridge and posts to lower the cavity, I'm going to look around for some Gretsch style bridges and pricing.
Had you known the pickup was shorter you could have centered it to the neck and there would have been no problem. But as it sits your right. The high E would be lower in volume.
That's why I was thinking of using blade poles for the bridge pickup, got'em sitting in my parts bin that I removed from another pickup. It may change how the pickup sounds a bit though.
Won't be doing anything for a week or 2 since I cut the ring finger on my left hand cleaning a catfish last night. Required stitches. Gives me time to think things out.
