low G string tuning in open G tuning

In open G tuning is there a trick to make tuning the low G string  easier. I am using a A string for it

No the Ovation is my 6 stringer that I use for regular playing. I can't make a sea sick Steve style out of it yet it is the only acoustic guitar I have right now. I have a Fender squire strat that I am wanting to trade for another acoustic so I can leave one in standard tuning and use the ovation for off tunings

Sounds like you have a plan. Are you converting the Ovation to a "Seasick Steve"-style 3 string built on a 6 string body, or is that a different project from your described fret-broke, bad action 3 stinger?

I was just having issues getting the A dropped down to the G. I am going to use my ovation and drop the A down to a G on it then tune the 3 string to it. My Ovation has a built in tuner that as you go up or down it tells you each note so it is easy to tune to other tunings. I dismantled my 3 string for the time being broke a fret and not satisfied with the action anyway. Coming back hopefully with a new and improved model. Then I am going to do a custom build.

What is the problem you're having? It's fairly typical to use an A string from most any 6 string set, tune it down a step to G. Give us a little detail, let's see what pops up in here. I use A-D-G strings on most of my builds these days, usually .036/.026/.017 gauge Ernie Ball Regular Slinky strings, tuned to GDg. But I've used several other brands and "next door" gauges. Depends what's on sale.
