Richard, look on home page, and click on how to play, choose either Keni or Knotlenny. They will explain it.
Maybe I didnt use the right words. How do YOU ! tune YOUR ! three string.
I guess the real questions here is, is there a consensus on what tunning the three string is being played at ?
I'm not sure what mine is tuned to..I turn em till I like it : ) I should prolly plug it into the ole tuner and see what it is.
No, this is really what I am trying to find out. Just how are these three strings being played by most people.
Richard, I have one tuned Ebe, and one tuned AEA and I have tuned GDG originally. I have no idea what I am doing but I changed them from GDG because the box and string combo just sounded better in the other tunings. They are really kind of the same tuning just different octave (is that correct) Knotlenny calls it say (can) you see tuning. ( I still use the tuner, don't tell Knot lenny.
Richard,

I started out with D-A-D... but with a lot of songs it in a strange place on the fret board... so, now I'm mostly G-D-g ...

Both open Major tunings.... I do a lot of work in open minor tunings.... middle string down 2 1/2 steps and with open 7th tunings, 1st string down one 1/2 step. Both allow for a lot of variety and (especially with the open 7th tuning) mixing the tuning with major chords with simple fingerings...

the b est,

Sam
If you are doing Star Spangled Banner tuning (thanks, KnotLenny!) you are in 1 5 8 tuning, and open power chord. So that's like DAd or GDg, or AEa, or EBe and like that. Whichever sounds best on your cigar box is the one to use, I say!

Lately I"ve been fooling around with DAc (1 5 7, aoelian) which is especially fun if you have dulcimer fretting.

And I use DAE so I can play in any key with (partial) mandolin chords that only need two fingers. I put up a DAE chord chart somewhere, if forget where.
I tuned AEA because I started GDG, but it was too floppy, my scale length was only 23", so AEA sounded better and the tension felt right. If I go higher, I might bend and break my box!
Clare, you will probably break your strings first, I have : )
